Gosselin Says Arkin Likely Two Years....

People seem to think a rookie was automatically going to step in and start for Kosier or Davis if we'd pulled the trigger earlier.

Kosier is still a savy, experienced and productive OG when healthy...he's a starter. Davis, according to what I've read, really came on strong and played much better after Garrett took over...finished strong.

Finally, we drafted some depth and competition that should eventually replace people. That's not only good for the future and our current depth; that's good for the vets who will prepare just a little harder to make sure they don't lose their spots that were simply handed to them in the past.

Kosier is not my worry. I wish we had 2 Kosiers.

My worry is Davis. He was bad all year. He plays way to top heavy and he doesn't keep his feet moving.

He is Also very prone to getting beat on stunts and twists.

IMO he needs to get himself in better shape (lose weight) or go find a new job.

I would consider playing Holland over him at this point.

yup,,, going into this draft the team should have already been planning on stop gap FA's for the OL

I don't see this at all.

Great post. We get into cost cutting mode Davis could be in trouble. If he doesn't shape up I'd start Holland in a second.

....I would say that's to be expected with a 4th rounder. Bring him along slowly and PROPERLY. Like they did Free....I'm down with that.;)

That's kind of my issue with the Murray pick, there were linemen that could have contributed this year available there and we went RB?

We will get a bigger contribution from drafting a RB in the third NOT a OL.

With Barber and Choice likely gone, Murray will see the field a ton.

Even if we had drafted Rackley instead of Murray his playing time would have been very limited.

I don't think we see a stopgap at RT -- Smith is going to play and we'll live with the struggles. Kosier is re-signing and that is not a stopgap -- he'll have a long term deal and will be our LG for at least three more years. Davis likely is asked to take a pay cut - likely not a huge one (e.g., down to 4 mill a year). He probably does and stays.

So I'm not really seeing where we are going to bring in FAs

i agree with this
the problem with davis is not talent, it is conditioning and motivation

this is a problem that garrett and woicick can solve (maybe)

having said that, i really did want us to draft a OG/C with real talent in this draft

i would have been perfectly happy if we had drafted the best OG (like ijalana etc) with our #2 pick

now, if carter turns into a starting ILB by next year i wont complain because we do need an ILB with speed who can cover for the 3-4 to be really effective, front 7 is key

also, i think that murray will be given the opportunity to contributre plenty this year because my gut tells me that neither barber nor choice will be on the team when the season opens (and i am fine with that)

Why's that?

Update: Ah I see, you have Kosier resigning. At 32, I think it's time we move on, personally. I think the entire line needs to be revamped with Smith and Free as the cornerstones. Davis should be getting his walking papers soon as well, but I can see resigning Kosier to a 3 year deal and developing Arkin.

We haven't had great luck with midround linemen though, so I can't say I'm particularly optimistic about that idea.

Kosier will be resigned. Davis is on his last days. Our line will be rebuilt around Smith and Free. I love that we have plenty of bodies creating tons of competition.

Is it me or does the offense generally play better when Holland plays? I don't see him get embarrased like Davis does. He seems to do pretty well when I watch him. I think he's a guy who could be very good with a guy like Woicik working with him but, unfortunately, that's not happening too much this offseason. I prefer Holland over Davis. I'm not going to say that the coaches know better, because they don't always seem to make the right decisions when it comes to playing time. Look at what happened when Free and Austin got a chance due to injury. Choice always seems to play better than Barber but maybe he blows assignments we aren't aware of or something. Even Crayton played better than RW. I guess the driving force behind RW playing over Austin and Crayton was the same reason we still watch Davis stand out there like a statue. I hope the money thing isn't a factor and Garrett makes the right calls this year.

If the Cowboys had identified an interior OL that they thought could have contributed this year, they would have probably taken him in the second round. I think this would have been Watkins had he fallen to them at 40.

Although they liked him, the Cowboys probably didn't view Rackley as an immediate contributor since they passed on him in the third round. And since Rackley fell to the middle of the third round, the rest of the league likely felt the same way as well.

That's fine but to counter that, the team's ability to analyze linemen and their potential contributions has not been a calling card for some time.

So just because the Cowboys didn't think Rackley was ready to contribute or worth a third doesn't mean he wasn't or isn't.

I won't disagree with you there, although since they picked three OL's this year so I hope that improves. However, the fact is Rackley lasted until the mid-third round so I think the rest of the league had serious questions about his ability to contribute immediately as well. Not to say that he won't contribute right away, but that it is questionable.

The Cowboys seem to be very high on Arkin. The key question here is how they view Rackley vs Arkin. If they view them as comparable players that would need a compable time to develop, then I think they made the right move in round 3. They are doing a draft recap show on ESPN right now and Kiper and McShay seem to thing Arkin will be starting soon.

Good stuff.

Someone said that the weight/strength program at his school was pretty sad but no surprise.

People, do not get carried away over Woicik. Is he the best? YES. Is he better than JJ? Yes. BUT he is NOT worlds better. The improvements on current personnel who have been here a couple of years will not be that great. DEFINITE- but not great. He will not be working miracles. Now for a guy like Arkin, it will seem that way as he is starting pretty far down.

I was at the Tennessee game last year. It didn't take a brain surgeon to figure out Davis was sucking. I would have been tempted to go with Holland the rest of the season after that debacle.

I was there too. Flew from Jersey to watch Colombo get penalized for falling down and Davis suck beyond belief. I never understood why Davis got his job back so quickly after that debacle.
