Grade Lance's performance

well, you can pretty much then say this about any NFL player or college player....give them time to play and they "will" be good.

but there is evidence you look at and weight the possibility or probability. you know at this point, because you haven't been to practices, or film room or spent any time with him. you have a wishful thinking. a gamblers mentality. and 49ers made a mistake. realized it and then got what they could out of it. they walked away. he is not the first top 5 pick to fail in the NFL and become a bust, he won't be the last. so what did people see? he can scramble and run. he has a strong arm, and their egos told them we will make him a football player. his ceiling is not Burrows. that much is evident. hasn't come close. Burrows was good right off the bat, this kid is in year 4 in NFL and people are saying he needs a few more years.

so evidence to date says, he is nothing special. but if you are a gambler, wanting it all and betting on 0.000000000000000000012% chance he may become a burrows, then by all means push all your money to the middle.

if he was any good. had any potential. or any talent, then he would have supplanted Rush this year. the fact that after a year and a summer with the team, they just didn't trust him enough to even be the back up....and given his God given talent everyone keeps talking about couldn't beat a wet noodle arm Rush, should tell you all you need.

its the NFL. its become a QB driven league. so teams gamble. hoping to hit it. QBs get over drafted more than any other position. they get over paid more than any other position. and more QB busts happen than any other position. welcome to the NFL.
Tom Brady didn't beat out Bledsoe in training camp. They started the season 0-2 and it took an injury to Bledsoe to get Brady in and starting. It's not always about this player is just so much better than this player. When Dak when down they were still (mathematically) in playoff contention. Rush has started before, Rush has lead this team to victory before. Why gamble on the young guy when you have a known product? I also still believe the Cowboys want to retain Lance. The fact that no one has really seen much of him removes the chance for any kind of large contract offer from another team. So you can retain him, sit him, train him, and maybe he becomes something at some point. Maybe he doesn't. He's a backup on this team as long as Dak is making $60m/year.

Big Mike was trying to hold onto his job. Even though there was a 1% chance of making the playoffs.

Lance is clearly the better athlete.

I agree, I think the lance move was more publicity and Jerry trying to be like Parcells. Parcells used to take flyers on players that were drafted high, saying that somebody thought they were good, so its worth a flyer. except parcells had a plan, and jerry didn't. plus different positions. that was one of the stupidest trades ever by Jones (there are several of those) and I think it got topped by the mingo trade this year, probably the worst trade ever for jones.

The Mingo trade was far, far worse than the Lance trade. Both were 4th round picks, but the Mingo pick is going to be 10 spots or so higher.

The Mingo pales in comparison to what I think was Jerry’s worst trade ever - the Roy Williams trade.

I had no issue with the Lance trade. A 4th for the possibility of a QB drafted high with his physical traits is a good risk/reward. It doesn’t mean it works out, but it was worth the chance.

he is not even on the same continent as Dak....seriously.....

but then again if Lance starts, we probably end up with 1st over all pick and if that's Manning, then heck yes
and his salary is not on the same continent as 250 million either. That's a top OL, DL and WR you could add instead. Dak does not win games in the postseason for you. The trenches could! Dak is going to be a shadow of his former self as well. He is physically detiorating each year

Trey Lance isnt a flyer.

He played the entire preseason and has 1 start with us.

Not bad for a 24yr old kid. 3rd Pick 2021 draft.

Yup.

And Dak has a post june 1 cut in his future. March 2026.

I didn't see one "gamer" issue with Lance's performance. He answered each WAS drive with points opportunities.

He missed the Dowdle throw but pretty much moved the football into scoring range all day.

The RZ woes definitely weren't unique to Trey Lance's performance yesterday. And no CeeDee on the field and Ferguson was a disaster yesterday all afternoon.
meh this isn't a bad argument tbh you got me there. I'm probably being unfair about the lack of touchdowns

D-

No throws to the interior of the field. One read and take off. Only sees half of the field. Only takes the ball in shotgun. Every passing play is a rollout play leaving half of the field unused.

No touch on the ball. Inconsistent. Poor accuracy. Zero ability to throw the receiver open. No anticipation ability.

He is every defensive coordinators wet dream. A two year old could easily build a game plan against him.
You just described Dak in years 1 through 5. He got better. Somewhat anyway. In general, I believe that Dak is a "good" QB. Not "Elite" or "Great", just "good". We COULD have much worse. That contract though...SMH.

Missed some throws, missed some open guys, but you can see why people have gambled on him. He throws a pretty ball and is just a ridiculous athlete. the escape he made at the goalline where he then threw it at the receivers feet was incredible. Few guys get out of that collapsing pocket. but then he missed what should have been a simple throw.

I'd go C+ or B-. If someone offers him another payday, I'd let him walk. at some point you've got to see more than this. he's been around forever and still plays like the greenest of rookies.
