Dr. Z says...

Washington Commanders: The first four picks and five of the first eight went for offensive players, with a punter thrown in. Never mind that age is creeping into the defense, and the death of free safety Sean Taylor left that unit depleted, so why ... ah, why bother?

no but to say the value and depth for the WR didn't come in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of this draft is crazy.

Then why didn't the Cowboys grab one of thes "value and depth" recievers when most Cowboy fans know that our recievers need upgraded? Are you more knowledgable than the Cowboys scouts and coaching staff? I doubt it...

All the other teams around the league picked them up. Are the cowboys ahead of the curve because they decide not to pick there up ?? Jerry Jones feels confident in our in house guys that why he didn't pick anyone up. If i was the GM for the cowboys would i went after of those WR yes but since i'm not we have to accept Jerry's decision not to pick one up. Everyone in our division added a WR. Some of the decision the cowboys have made have poor that much is true and this draft was rather poor when it comes to the decision making of the cowboys.

I've said it before: the only bright spot about our drafts is that we can laugh at each other.
I think both Drafts wre OK, it's just us fans want every hole filled!.

There were ten receivers drafted in the second round. Clearly lots of teams thought there was value there.

If you consider the Commanders were calling and signing FA WR's in the middle of last season because they were so hobbled at the position they didn't have enough guys to practice, that they didn't get a WR TD until week ten, and that the Red Zone offense was their biggest problem primarily because of a lack of big receivers, not to mention more receiving threats at TE, and you consider that the WCO they are installing requires at least one solid large bodied receiver to implement, then the drafting, while unusual, does make some level of sense.

I think as far as addressing other needs, it just didn't fall that way. They weren't prepared to reach for players based solely on need and they weren't going to fulfill all their needs in one draft.

I look at the cowboys not taking a WR in the same perspective.

They addressed primary needs at 1 and 1 and by the time 2 came around there really wasn't anyone worth grabbing at the WR position.

The WR class wasn't weak there was just no stud WR in the 1st round like Braylon Edwards, Calvin Johnson, Roy Williams. However in the 2nd and 3rd rounds the WR were very strong and had a lot of depth and value there.

Well it was weak and because there were no legitimate first rounders. But that naturally puts the better WRs in this draft in the second. So I can't disagree too much.

Can't fault you with that logic but I think the point was they needed to address other needs. I'm not so sure the Skins didn't do right. We'll see. They did need help on the OL and more on the DL. But I guess they thought they would be ok with what they have and the WRs were stronger than any OL/DL in the second. That's subjective.

I do know this. If Zorn can get things rolling with the WCO, then the Skins could be a dangerous team. I think it will take time and I expect the Skins to drop back a little this year. But that may be wishful thinking. I always respect my opponent as that is the fastest way to lose to them. But I don't find the Skins to be nearly as scary as NY and I suspect if Philly can get their D going then the Skins will have a hard time of staying out of the cellar.

I absolutely agree the skins need help on the Oline and Dline. I would have been much happier taking Phillip Merling in the first (not trading down) and Kelly in the second. Or even taking one of the top guards or centers in the second, and letting WR be a hole.

Phillip Merling in first? Phillip merling will be good in 2 to 3 year. Like most of rookie DE they will have hard time in first year. If merling go in second? If we would pick merling with 21 pick people will still complain about we pick him too early. I like the way skins drafts. Chad Rinehard will be a solid back up for us this year. I dont know why people hate fred Davis pick if cooley got hurt last season we have noone to take Cooley spot. What area the Commanders have the most troubles on Offense? Red zone now we got two solid TE that we can use on Red zone. Let talk about Two WR. I dont know alot about WCO but what I read we will be in alot of 3 WR set and 4 WR set this season. The only WR we had is Moss and ARE. James trash is not a solid WR, Mix we dont know what he can and cannot do. 2 WR was a need in draft.

I'll give the Commanders one thing...while I think they should have used their #1 pick on the DL, at least they got all those receiving threats by trading out of the first round and picking them all up later...I think that takes a little of the sting out of it for their fans. It would have been ugly had they used their first rounder to get the same receiver they got in round 2.

And while none of these guys were supposed to be first round talent, there was pretty good depth at the position, and they got the top ranked guy, along with another high profile WR....they got big guys, which is what they wanted.

Still, I can't help thinking Zorn and the Skins are in for a rocky start.
