An Aikman/Elway type will always be the #1 player on a draft board. If he is as low as #4, he is not one.
I think Spencer was in the mid teens at best, doubt if he was higher. What he WAS was the LAST top tier pass rusher.

Where was Spencer ranked on their board? What if it was 7 or 9 and he was available at 22 PLUS next year's first?
Very good questions. I wish someone had the answer. It would certainly throw a new light on all the Quinn teeth gnashing, THAT'S for sure.

The only obvious thing about the draft board was that Calvin Johnson was #1. Thomas was PROBABLY#2, Russell, Landry, Peterson makes up the top 5 more then likely. After that it gets a little harder to figure. But no way was Spencer even top 10. Probably not even top 15. He might not even have been the top player on the board at 22. BUT he was the last of the top pass rushers left and we needed one and we were going to take him.

"Quinn was ranked No. 8 on the Cowboys' draft board. They could have gotten him with the 22nd pick."

Where was Spencer ranked on their board? What if it was 7 or 9 and he was available at 22 PLUS next year's first? And selecting Brady would have given us a benchwarmer for ae t least 2 years versus an immediate contributor in an area of greatest need--pass rush. And who says Quinn is guaranteed to be a franchise QB rather than a Kerry Collins or a Ryan Leaf? Tis was a no brainer!!
Spencer was ranked right around where he was picked according to Ireland. There were three players they were considering at #22 and Spencer was one of them.

In several different articles and recaps in the Daily Zone, Ireland and Jerry stated that.

Goose had spencer at # 34 on his top 100 list. Most others seem to have had him late 20s to middle 30s. By the way, Goose has Russel at #3, Quinn at #5, Edwards at #37, Stanton at #41, Kolb at # 44.

So, Quinn was around #8 and Spencer was around #22.

Hmm...

A: Jones wants to win now, but could've chosen Quinn and possibly set the offense back a year or two.

OR

B: He could leave the offense as is, get a player rated around #22, improve the defense AND land a first-round draft choice in '08.

"B. Final answer."

I also read that he was in their top 15 players.

Ireland has said before that they don't have a vertical board, so it's hard to say what that means. They probably had a good of 8 players as the top tier players and a group of players 9-15 or so as a 2nd tier. Who knows.

Well I think we can say that the Cowboys, as an organization, thought Quinn had the capability to be a franchise caliber QB, otherwise they wouldn't have had him rated 8th overall. It just speaks highly of their thoughts on Romo, to pass on someone they had rated that highly. Opinions around here may be mixed, but do to Quinn's high spot on the draft board I think it's fairly obvious how Dallas felt about him as a player.

great - but now back the quinn truck up some and realize WE PASSED ON HIM for romo. wouldn't that - by your own logic - tell you what think of romo?

how come you'll let speculation and guesswork swing ONE way but not the other?

i don't know what's going to be more annoying - the merriman ware debates or the quinn romo ones.

One has to factor in Jerrah's eyes lighting up with the thought of getting a high #1 in 2008.
