Guaranteed pro bowl player

Why are we excluding QB? That's the obvious answer. Is Dak untouchable in this conversation? Or can we stop pretending he's not the guy killing this team?

If we can get a QB with the qualifications that you described, we can officially start a meaningful rebuild and be a realistic contender in a couple of years.

Spinning our wheels like we've been doing for the past 30 years is no longer working for me.
Depends on the QB. Did you have someone in mind?

Please dear lord don;t say manning~!

Let's play the what if game.

If you were guaranteed our 1st pick in the upcoming NFL draft was a guaranteed, multi year pro bowl type player, excluding qb, what position would be most helpful in your opinion?
DT.

Any other answer is wrong. Adding that type of difference maker to the defense would have impact like we haven't seen since the SB days.

Making the entire defense better starts in the trenches and up the middle.

I could see a solid case for DE for obvious reasons, but this team desperately needs a talent upgrade at safety and linebacker as well.

That said, I also love the idea of having a pro bowl caliber guy next to Booker. The right side of the OL would be good for a decade.
If and we very well could get a top 10 pick then it’s either Peter Woods or TJ Parker in that order and hoping and praying to get the Matayo U “can’t spell his name” kid out of Oregon with the Packer pick.

They were prepared to start N Jones on the left and the Cornelius kid looked impressive during preseason. They should be given a shot to win the position. Even if they weren’t already here a 1st for a RT is poor allocation of resources.

Sorry a Safety just doesn’t move the needle enough to take one in the top 15, especially if they’re going to continue to hire zone DCs. Fix the defense from front to back.

Same with LB, unless they can consistently rush the passer. Not interested in a top 10-12 off the ball linebacker.

Currently there’s Peter Woods and then there’s a couple of guys rated mid 2nd to 4th depending on who’s evaluating. This is a weak draft for DTs. There’s a couple of edge DEs and a fair amount of strong side types reminiscent of Kneeland.
After the Bears game I’m hoping for a top 10 pick with Peter Woods as the target and TJ Parker as a really good consolation prize!

I'm all for both drafting and re-building the defense through free agency, but in that scenario you bring up, OT
Another one?

LOL,.

It doesnt matter. If he is a generational talent Jerry will overpay someone else and trade him for 2 picks. Rinse and repeat.

Yall really dont see that Jerry has no idea what he is doing do you?

The Cowboys are on pace to field at least the third worst defense in franchise history. They cannot rush the passer. They can't cover anyone at corner. The safeties look lost. The linebackers take bad angles and miss tackles.

So, obviously, the Cowboys need a new quarterback. Makes all those issues go away.

Caleb Downs - S, Ohio State. Would transform the secondary instantly.

Note that I said 'transform', not 'fix entirely'.

MLB. A legit MLB is transformative. One of the many reasons I wanted Micah at LB is because it is harder to scheme around a LB than it is an DE.

Stephen Jones, is that you?
Another 1st on the offensive line?

I mean at this point, a legit probowl player anywhere on defense would be huge.
Corner, Safety, DE, LB who isn't made of glass, DT
Ya the defense goes begging in the Cowboys minds

Great question

Our roster sucks

So you don't try and fill holes in this scenario (just like you should never do with rd1 picks), andnyou just take the most impactful/important position. NEED is only a tie breaker

Off Tackle or Pass Rushing edge player.

Neither CB nor WR is on that tier of importance

OT, just because they play forever. A stud tackle can give you high level play deep into his 30s.

CB is a roller coaster position, and most are done by age 30. They just can't afford to lose a step. LBs get beat up way too easily. DTs can play into their 30s, but usually not at their best, unless they're a Benjamin Button freak like Cam Heyward.

TEs age weirdly well too. Blocking just doesn't seem to physically wear down athletes very much, and they are often tackled by smaller guys then them. If his health cooperates, a good TE can be an impact player well into his 30s, and then hang on in a Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez type catch-and-fall role literally forever.

A Defensive End - A JJ Watt-in-his-prime-type dude. Someone who just wrecks 2/5 of the O-Line and blocking backs on almost every snap and is a sure tackler.
