The message is crystal clear. Again, Jason Garrett wants to and will run the football this year, the way he wants to run the football. The screen game will be a bigger part of the offense now. The increase in zone run blocking is obvious. Garrett has made an emphatic statement about last year's run blocking (especially) and the extremely leaky pass protection.
Last year's run blocking was unacceptable and extremely poor, and the completely rebuilt, completely re-tooled, extremely young, extremely athletic, much stronger, tough, smart, and hungry offensive line now completely fits Felix Jones' running skills. This new offensive line should make Felix Jones even more dangerous. The early returns are excellent for the young pups up front.
The offensive line has been completely rebuilt around the running skills of Felix Jones, and the new wave of offensive linemen will protect Tony Romo better, too. The Cowboys now have young, fast, quick, and agile athletes who can run and block in space, and they are better equipped to deal with today's extremely athletic defensive fronts. This will allow Dallas to play with the entire field and not just one side, like last year. Furthermore, this will allow Jason Garrett to play the style of offense that he wants to play, especially in the running and screen games.
Felix Jones and the Dallas offense just became more dangerous, especially Felix Jones.
This was the absolute right move, and it made too much sense. Phil Costa has showed the coaches and Garrett that he is ready to start now. Costa fits Jason Garrett's puzzle. In fact, he is the final piece, and again, he's ready to start. Why wait? The team just went 6-10. It's time for big changes, and Garrett has delivered, big time. I'm very happy about it, too.
Andre Gurode (a five time Pro Bowl player) was a warrior. His contributions and value will not be forgotten. However, Phil Costa has won the job outright. Costa is the future, and the future is now.
Does anyone remember past playoff failures of Dallas' old, slow footed offensive lines? Does anyone remember losing a bye, in the NFC, due to very poor goal-line run blocking (see the San Diego game)?
Jason Garrett is turning the Cowboys offensive line into an extremely young, extremely athletic, smart, and tough blue-collar group, and blue-collar teams win in the NFL, not over-rated, over-paid players or players who are past their prime or better days.
