Can you imagine taking him over Manning? Then the Colts dodged another bullet by taking Edge instead of Williams.

:laugh2:

That would have cost them the SB...!

There are alot of gutsy things that happen every year and stupid things too. But it seems if it works out it's gutsy and in hindsight if it didn't it was stupid.

ie. Drew Henson - would have been gutsy if it had worked out but in retrospect it was stupid.

Gutsy - I thought taking Eli was fairly gutsy but mostly because of the way it worked out.

hmm, good one

passing on Moss to take Kevin Dyson, because Dyson was a much lesser character concern

and much lesser WR

They said gutsiest pick right? IMO, that has to go down as the stupidest pick of all time.

If the Cowboys had made that move, they would still be getting ripped.

IMO, the Cowboys have actually taken more criticism then the Titans for passing on Moss and they at least filled a different need.

Nope. But they had Clarett.
If Clarett fits the criteria, then Phillips undoubtedly should be on the list. He was the 6th overall (I believe), an unbelievable risk for someone as troubled as he was.

Being from S.Dakota and growing up following the Huskers, i'll tell you the national public didn't and still doesn't know half the stuff Phillips got away with. He was a HUGE risk and everyone that really knew that program realized he was on the edge.

Nope. It could be a gutsy choice that worked out well. I think McGahee is an example of that.
In the end, I think the McGahee pick was a waste. Buffalo already had a good tailback in Henry (who is arguably as good as or better than McGahee even now) and I'm sure they could have addressed another need with that pick.

A deeply flawed human being.

Edge over Williams was the first thing I thought of. Very gutsy that high in the draft and passing over the consensus better player.

Clarrett wasn't much of a risk in the 3rd. Not on a historical basis.

Trading Vick to take LT a couple of picks later was gutsy by San Diego, Vick was the instant hype and highlight reel but LT was the franchise player no one realized yet.

Taking Brees at the beginning of round 2 made it a stellar draft for the Chargers.

LT> Vick but LT+ Brees >>>>Vick.

Taking Russell Maryland number one overall was risky as well, everyone was gunning for Rocket Ismail but he wanted too much money and Dallas said no, turns out Ismail signed with the CFL and no one got to draft him that year.

Matt Jones.

I understand it's a questionable call b/c of his combine numbers, but still, you rarely see kids switching postions in the first rd.

He isn't a pro bowler yet, but he will be. jmo.

Jevon Kearse also.

A hybrid that was taken in the first. Huey Richardson (also from from Florida) didn't do him any favors by being a huge bust for the Steelers.

Hybrids are sorta in vogue these days, but not when Kearse was drafted.

True... but Dallas didn't have much of a choice... that's one of the sorriest drafts to come along EVER...

I'm still not too clear on the criteria, but here are a few more that come to mind:

Jeff Lageman- Jets
Trev Alberts- Colts
Greg Ellis- Cowboys (It takes guts to pass on the receiver everybody wanted you to pick.)

Good call. Clifford Charlton was another disappointing Florida LB.

The thing was, it was seen as weak at the time, but it actually wasn't that bad.

The first round produced: Maryland, Eric Turner, Croel (who was initially good), Todd Lyght, Eric Swann, Stanley Richard, Herman Moore, Alvin Harper, Mike Pritchard, Leonard Russell, Alfred Williams, Kelvin Pritchett, Ted Washington, Henry Jones.

Not great, but not as bad as most predicted it would be. It was also a great overall draft for Dallas: Maryland, Harper, Dixon Edwards, Erik Williams, Leon Lett, Godfrey Myles (useful squad player), and Larry Brown.

2002 by comparison, turned out to be pretty weak at the top. Check out the top 10:

1. Emtman
2. Coryatt
3. Sean Gilbert
4. Desmond Howard
5. Terrell Buckley
6. David Klingler
7. Troy Vincent
8. Bob Whitfield
9. Tommy Vardell
10. Ray Roberts

Of those guys, only Vincent and Whitfield really justified their draft position. Gilbert had his moments and Roberts was solid enough; Emtman, Coryatt, Howard, Buckley, Klingler and Vardell were all varying degrees of bust.
