Since we can look back at most of these picks with 20/20 hindsight, we can separate gutsy with stupid. The ones that worked out can get the gutsy lable and the ones that don't can get the stupid lable. I am sure at the time each pick occurred there were several people on each side of the argurement. I know this board had lots of opinions on Clarett.

I think it was gutsy of Dallas to draft Bob Hayes. It was only a 7th round pick, but still he was not a sure thing.

It was gutsy to trade three 2nd round picks to draft Tony Dorsett. He was a small running back even for his era.

It was gutsy(stupid) for the Bengals to draft Akili Smith. One good year in college and they thought he was worthy of a high 1st round pick. Similar to the Ravens drafting Kyle Boller.

The Oilers drafting Steve McNair was gutsy. He played at a small college that ran a non-pro style offense. It really was difficult to get a great read on the type of pro he may develop into.

The Cowboys using a 5th rounder for Herschel Walker showed some moxie.

I like Hail Mary's mention of Matt Jones. That is one of the more gutsy 1st round picks that I can remember.

was Curtis Martin on there, since he had torn his ACL in the first game of his senior year?

It wasn't an ACL injury. He went off on Texas in his first game going for 251 yards. In his second game that year(1995) he injured his ankle and then missed the rest of the season. It was somewhat gutsy to draft a guy who didn't play the full season, but not as much if he had torn his ACL.

The Houston Texans made a gutsy(dumb) decision to draft Tony Hollings in the 2nd round of the 2003 supplemental draft. He only played 4 games at running back in college before tearing his ACL. Sure he was leading the nation in rushing after those 4 games, but what did anyone truly know about him.

He spent his first two years at GaTech as a defensive back before moving to running back in 2002. He faced Vandy, UConn, Clemson and BYU that year. Clemson is the only one that can be considered big time as far as defenses and lately they have not been great. He had potential, but you don't spend a high pick on a guy that has only shown potential.

I remember some pushing for Dallas to look at him in the supplemental draft that year. With Troy Hambrick set as the starter going into the year, it would not have been a bad pick up. I just didn't see anyone pushing to get him with anything higher than a 4th rounder. Houston using a 2nd was more than most expected.

Thanks for the correction there, guess I should research before blurting things out. My memory let me down.... again...
