Guys we had targeted in the draft that we missed by an eyelash?

It should have been clear who we were interested in among the safeties.

We loved Delmas, liked Hamlin and also Chris Clemons (the Clemson safeties) and were lukewarm on White. Rashad Johnson was never even mentioned. It might be a case where he wasn't a fit.

And if what Maxie is saying here is how we felt, then I don't understand how we could have "missed" if we never wanted him to begin with. The ones that bother me are the near misses that we have nearly every year where we weren't aggressive in going after them, like Unger for example.
I agree and if the OP is correct and Deion Butler was also a target in the 4th then it looks like Seattle may have just scouted the Cowboys very well since both cases (Unger and Butler)they were the team that took our guy.

I heard in Seattle's Rookie camp Butler looked really good and they were even more surprised by his quickness.

Me too, he was a guy that I wanted but most draft sites had him as a fifth round pick so I wasnt expecting him quite that high even though I think he should have been.

As I recall, we had Jerry Rice as our target way back when. SF traded up and stole him.

41gy# pointed out before the draft, the template of the types of players we like to grab -- big and/or fast

Rashad was neither big (he played at around 180 for his college career), nor particularly fast

I liked Rashad's intangibles and wanted us to draft him like the rest of the people here, but it doesn't seem like we like to draft players who have physical limitations, it's something for everyone to look out for next year if there's a similar type of player to Johnson that everyone likes because of the intangibles

btw, not saying intangibles aren't what we're not looking at, as we got alot of high-character and smart players in this draft, but they were either big (Brandon Williams, Rob Brewster and Michael Hamlin) and/or fast (the rest of the draft picks)

Unger's the one for me.
...

I'd prefer the team be agressive all the time when they see a player they really like.

I really like how the Eagles draft -- they tend to have a ton of picks and they use those picks to get up and get the guys they like. I'd have loved to see us do to that with Unger

Well I think the original premise of the OP was to ask which ones did we miss that the cowboys targeted.

Either people misunderstood or just decided to go off of the OP topic and start talking about who we missed that THEY wanted and not the cowboys.

And even after you point it out, people just go on doing what they want instead of answering the question.

sometime draft work in funny ways. Still remember Johnson wanted to trade for a LB from Michigan named Percy Snow but he was taken by KC so JJ HAD to settle picking Emmitt Smith. That worked out pretty good I think.

Sometime, you just let the draft fall in place.

It isn't exact science.

He also wanted James Francis, Ray Agnew and Lamar Lathon badly. We ended up with Emmitt Smith thanks to Joe Broadsky. Damn the luck.

I remember that draft well. I also remember thinking we shouldn't take a RB high even though it was a huge need area.
My thinking was that RB's can contribute in their rookie season and we were so far away from being competitive that we should focus on the filling the positions that take more time to develope.
Perhaps the 91 or even 92 draft would be the best time to select that stud RB as a finishing touch.

Just goes to show you have to be flexible because you never know how the draft will play out and what great talent might be staring you in the face.

Here's a more recent example.

From what I understand, the Cowboys did not believe Mike Jenkins would last til their 2nd 1st rd selection.
Not sure what their "plan" was for that 1st rd pk, but it wasn't to select him.
Well he was and they did.
Now having made such a large investment at CB when it already wasn't a top priority, they have another CB in Scandrick sitting their in the 4th rd.
Oh boy we really don't need another CB this high. Oh well he's simply the highest rated player on our board by far.

Well both these guys will probably start for us this year. If we go where we all hope, these two are going to play a big role.

Kidding aside, if Unger was so coveted, why doesn't Jerry just try and trade for him NOW. Why not give Seattle a pick(s) and/or player(s) for the guy? Make it worth the Seahawk's while (they did trade up to get him) and fix the OL flexibility & depth for this season.

I believe Seattle still needs a pass rusher and/or a RB.

There's really no way they could pry Unger away from Seattle now. They would have to overpay at the least.

What does overpay mean? Trading future pick(s) / player(s)???

He was a second round pick, so the starting point would be next years 1st and a player or other decent pick I'm sure.

Or a second & a fourth? Or 2 seconds (2010 & 2011)? Or a 2nd, Proctor and a starter (Ellis?)?

I think there is some trade flexibility w/out having to sacrifice a first. Just my opinion. What does it hurt to ask?
