Bruce Allen: Commanders would trade for McNabb again

6/19/2011 8:40:22 AM

After all of the controversy surrounding Donovan McNabb and the Commanders last season, one would think the Commanders may have wished they never made the trade and sending two draft picks to Philly for the quarterback. But that isn't so.

“We would make the move again to get Donovan,” the Commanders’ GM told Kelli Johnson of Comcast SportsNet by way of Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “The 6-10 [record] isn’t what we had dreamed for our season, [but] once again, I can’t pinpoint one person. We have to improve special teams, defense and offense.”

Johnson then asked why McNabb never gelled with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, but again, Allen said ‘twas not so.

“I don’t know if I would use that characterization,” Allen said. “I think they gelled very well, actually, at times. It was the first year for everybody with the Washington Commanders, and it takes some time in order for people to learn another person’s desires.”

Allen would not commit to McNabb's future with the team.

“He’s on our roster right now,” the GM said. “We’ll see what happens in the future. Donovan’s performance last year was part of the team’s performance. I usually don’t try to single out one player for wins or losses.

He was a good captain for us, and we’ll see what happens.”

I read that more of an exercise of not throwing anyone under the bus, including himself. Its the off-season so this is their time to shine. :)

Sure they don't want to throw anyone under the bus and that includes himself.

Egos abound in the NFL and many times they don't want to admit to a mistake until years later.

I am pretty sure if they had to do it over again, they would not give up those picks.

Cue our resident Skins' fans to justify and clarify.

Bruce is the son of a coach and brother of a smooth talking politician.

No surprise what so ever. I wouldn't expect him to say anything else

He was being nice to McNabb. It's obvious to anyone with two brain cells the trade was a big mistake.

With Bruce Allen and Shanahan at helm, I have no fear of Commanders becoming serious Contenders for SB ever. They might have few winning seasons at best. Bruce Allen's track record is not since Raiders, and even that is questionable as to how much Bruce had to do with Selecting players, since Old wierd Al does all calls seems like.

Not for the Eagles though :)

And the Eagles knew it. The skins should have raised a red flag and asked themselves, why are they giving up the player that was the face of their franchise so easily. The Eagles stayed to their blueprint. Not pay or over peruse for their own aging players.

As a friend said to me, "that won't raise his trade value."

Agree- He will end up being cut. Hopefully Arizona picks him up, leaving 1 less team (in theory) looking for a QB next spring

Yup. The Eagles bent over the Commanders FO on this trade. No other way to put it but to say "terrible trade"

Which is why it appears operation Luck is now in effect, in particular if Beck is starting next season. I tell people that if John Beck starts for the Commanders in 2011, Andrew Luck will be starting in 2012 because we will be historically bad

I was wondering as I read your response if you are already targeting Andrew Luck in 2012.

I think most Skins fans are thinking they will go 2-14 or 3-13 next year which will put them basically at the top for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. In other ways, the Skins are tanking the 2011 season.

Personally, after seeing him play live in the Orange Bowl (oh what a debacle for my school) I am as sold on him as any QB prospect that I have paid close attention to the last 20 years.

You are combining Elway like athleticism, with Manning like smarts and a deadly arm. Add intangibles, such as being a smart Stanford kid running a pro style offense, and he is off the charts.

With the odds of even making the playoffs very low with the current roster, play the young draft picks, get experience for the Kerrigan, Hankerson, Jenkins, Nield, Helu, type players, weed out those who no longer fit and just hope that John Beck doesn't suffer a Theisman injury because that would be unfair to the young man.

If by some miracle Beck is the 2011 version of a 1999 Kurt Warner, fantastic, one less thing to worry about. If not, take the bumpy ride and be happy with that number 1 overall pick.

This would be made even easier to swallow if the season is cut short. Going 1-9 or 1-10 is far less painful then 1-15

MS and Bruce Allen have done very little to improve that team since taking over. They brought in a bunch of old cats last year who took up TC roster spots when they should have been looking at new young talent with those spots. They let Fat Albert disrupt their TC and season and they still haven't got that straight cause he's still on the team. They totally screwed up the McFlabb trade, they signed a hobbled Jamal Brown coming off hip surgery who couldn't play worth a darn. They signed TW who had the "LAZY" tag on him in college and he's living up to that by being a no show at all the team workouts this off season. Chris Russell the teams beat reporter said that TW was consistently late for meetings last year and was in the doghouse for lack of effort. They don't have a starting QB or even a backup QB on the team yet. They still don't have a legit NT while trying to run the 3-4. They have no veteran WR with any size or speed. Their center is extremely weak and small in size. I could go on and on, MS and Bruce Allen have done jack since taking over. As LaVar has said many times on is radio show, they wasted a entire year and have made no progress at all. They will finish DEAD LAST again this year too...

+1 not like he is going to say he would never have picked up a guy on his roster when said player is still there

I told people 2 years ago Luck was the real deal when I saw him play. Part of me would love it if you are in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Part of me would hate it. I hope you are in it and lose out to someone like Minnesota or Arizona (the team I actually think ends up with him).

Like I said earlier, I think he's trying to drum up trade interest by saying they would do it again and it isn't a mistake.

I'm rooting for an outright waiver. Par.
