Ken Hamlin talks about his contract, his future and Roy Williams

When the Cowboys signed Ken Hamlin last season I was a little skeptical about just how good he could be as a Free Safety who would be the 'QB of the defense' for Wade Phillips. By the time the season was over I was not only sold on him being a serious upgrade at the position, but I was pleased to hear he was going to the Pro Bowl and hoping Jerry Jones would offer him a long term contract at some point.

Hamlin was on NFL Sirius Radio today, here's his entire 13 minute interview..

Jerry is going to make sure that Hamlin gets his deal because last season was the first time since Darren Woodson left that the Cowboys had a Free Safety who helped the team win games. Wade has his 'QB' so that's another big issue and hopefully he's even better this season after a year in the system.

I completely expected him to be positive in this interview about Roy Williams being able to come into this season and play well, but it was interesting to hear him, in not so many words, say that Roy talked to him about the criticism last year. He also tried to help out Roy's cause by saying that another year in Wade's defense should help him in 2008.

After having Woody there for so long I think Cowboys Nation got spoiled, but it's nice have a guy at Free Safety who isn't the weak link anymore.

Sign him up Jerry. We need this guy long term.

I hate how everything is about Roy though, just let him be for a little while. Give the man a break, I'm sure all this pressure doesn't help him at all.

JMO but Jerry locks up Hamlin for several years so at least one safety position is in solid and stable shape.

plz don't lock up Hamlin we when end up regretting it. We can insert random FS and get the same results.

We tried that, remember?

Seriously though I don't think we should be giving Hamlin anything more than a 3-4 year contract though, I'd rather we didn't make the same mistake we made with Roy and end up with a cap number that's too difficult to deal with if his play declines.

I'd agree with the 3-4 yr. deal...but not top 5 money. I think he played alittle above average last year...probably closer to average. It's just that we've had such crap back there since Woody left, average play looked great.

I do kinda feel bad for Roy though. It seems everybody and their mama is calling him out and he is having to defend himself, or be defended, in front of every news media outlet. Every tidbit about the Cowboys is turning into a Roy conversation. It goes like this:

Media guy: Sow how is that transition coming from Collegiate QB to professional WR?

Stanback: It's coming along well. I missed some opportunities with injuries last season that really held me back. But things are coming along well this offseason and I am excited to show everyone what I can do.

Media guy: That's great....So.......does that Roy Williams suck or what?

Sad but true. Then some will come out and say that Stanback is concerned about Roy because he talked about him.

I'd like for Hamlin to play at a high level again this year. I'm not convinced he can't be better. The FS of this defense should profit greatly from an improved pass rush and better CB play. I expect Hamlin to get 8 INTs this year.

The difference between Hamlin and Roy is primarily that of leadership. Wade has already made it clear that Hamlin became the QB of this defense from day-1. He had everybody lining up in their respective positions and was aggressive in this respect. It is the management perspective that really sets him apart.

These type of skills don't deteriorate. Roy on the other hand doesn't show really that much mental aptitude, and he relies purely on his athletic prowess and natural talent. I don't think the fear of Roy's deterioration should impact Ken Hamlin's contract talks.

Partial comprension (sp) of the message.

I see you have no alternatives to suggest, either. Great.

I don't think any FS could've played much better for us than Hamlin did last year. For a guy who was supposedly a strong safety type, he sure defended the pass well. Love the way he plucked the ball out of the air with his hands, too, like a good WR would.

IMO Roy mainly reacts to the play in front of him which he could get away with in college. He needs to read and react in the NFL which unfortunately for us fans, he does not do very well.

I hope we resign Hamlin for 3 years with top 10 money.

Please don't ever use that term again. Using the Raiders terms to discribe the Cowboys is like all the other loser teams and their loser fans claiming to be America's Team.

The Cowboys and their fans aren't losers. Don't make them appear that way.

Thanks :)

I have to admit, I was very skeptical about the Hamlin signing last year. But he certainly exceeded my expectations. Now if only Roy can pull his head out of his arse...

We could let Watkins play i think it's time for him to show his worth.

Their is no safety in the NFL that can cover one on one the best TE's in the league yet we ask it of him so there isn't no insert random for RW we should be happy with his play also.

Dude..this guy went straight to the Pro Bowl last year with this team. And he's got bunches of years left on the career.

Funny how for some fans being named to the Pro Bowl carries such weight, but when it's done by 13 other players on your team, suddenly being a Pro Bowler means you are 'average' and just another Pro Bowler..huh....?

:scratching my head:

Why keep playing with the personnel when we can have just what we have and just pay the going rate and not worry about the position for a few years..?

This defense needs all the help it can get.

Sign the guy.

And don't get too cute about it, either.

Soon would be fine.
