But once again, why should we sign a FS and HOPE that he wil return to form, when we can put just as much of a gamble on wat we have and even the draft. What differnce does it make WHO we HOPE on, when its HOPE either way?

Its all about probabilities. The difference is a 2nd round draft pick that was playing at an all pro level before suferring head injuries who just came back last season and a 5th round safety who was beat out by Keith Davis, statistically the worst starting safety in 2005.

Nothing is certain but banking on Watkins is suicide.

he wasnt beaten out, he was starting, but he gave up a couple of plays, and BP benched him. we are in a new scheme with a new coach, i'd rather take my chances with a guy who hasnt lost half the blood in his brain, because he couldnt stay out of the nightclubs, i had enough of that with Davis.

and if nothing is certain, then how is banking on watkins suicide. Can you not contradict yourself every other post?

No its not that simple he not only gave up big plays but when playing the deep zone he would consistently make the wrong read if he made a break at all. In short he was terrible so they benched him.

Look at the Atlanta game and him simply sucking at playing the deep zone. That 52 yard bomb that White caught was him not making the read. He wasnt in the play but it was his fault for not being in the play.

Well, when you are a rookie in the NFL, you blow coverages, but that doesnt mean he's a moron and will never be able to make the reads. You could at least give the guy a year, before you throw them off the road.

Reliable/decent depth at best...

with an improved pass rush, that can spell some serious fear for receivers trying to deal with patterns based on quick drops.

I understand that and if he is good enough next year to beat out a Hamlin or a Nelson than more power to him but if its just status quo for next year then that is not good enough and I think it wise to hedge our bets.

I wonder if his signing would lead to trading Roy?

Sure would be nice if we could get int he top ten of the draft and replace him.

We need to have cover safeties and Watkins & Hamlin would be a good duo.

WHAT!!!???

I'm not opposed to getting depth, but I am getting tired of the management trying to plug in someone elses discarded goods and hope that the player is the answer to our obvious FS problems. This isn't based on what I have seen on Sports Center either. Hamlin simply was not the same player he was before the injury. If he was the pro-bowl FS that everyone seems to think he is, then I don't see a reason why the Seahawks wouldn't re-sign him. We had a chance to solve the problem last year by drafting Anthony Smith or Ko Simpson, who was the next Darren Woodson IMO, but no, we just had to have Anthony Fasano. Now, here we are a year later, still no true starting FS, and gambling on a guy that got his skull cracked open in a club fight. If you want to get a true starting FS, this is the draft to do it in. All I'm saying is that we have better options.

His nickname in Seattle is the Hammer, not the blanket.

I'm guessing this has more to do with his name than his reputation for being a hitter. If his name was Ken Blank, he'd be "The Blanket".

Huh? So we should not try to get the best players available?

if you think it's a mistake, you"re gonna have to deal with it. we will sign him by next week

I personally don't think it is a mistake that we are trying to get him, I think the Cowboys will be making a mistake to sign him and pass on a true FS prospect in hopes that Hamlin is the answer to our problems. There is a reason he wasn't re-signed by Seattle and there are better players to be had through the draft than what Hamlin offers. It will be a mistake to pass on a FS and have still carry over the same problem next year if Hamlin is not able to solve the FS issue.

Can some one explain to me where Patrick Watkins got all of this support from? He was bad last year, and one of the players so many of you were keen to replace from the draft.

Hamlin is a GOOD player. You arent going to get Ken Hamlins in the fifth round of the draft. You arent even guaranteed a player of his quality if you draft some flavor of the month in the first round like Reggie Nelson who hasnt even done a damn thing in the NFL, but yet people think he is better than a player who can play at a pro bowl level in the NFL. Paying the man a reasonable contract is in the best interests of everyone involved.

We get a good player at free safety, Watkins isnt being counted on, we dont have to waste yet another high draft pick on yet another DB.

And what guarantee do we have that Hamlin will return to his Pro-Bowl form? What reason would Seattle have to not re-sign a 26 year old Pro Bowler? Guys, he just isn't playing up to the same level that he was before his injury. But like I said before, I am not against bringing him in; I am against the thought of passing up on a top FS draft prospect just becuase we hope Hamlin was the player he was two years ago. It's a gamble either way, but I would rather gamble on a highly regarded prospect than a player that got his skull cracked and then becamse discarded goods. It's nothing against Hamlin as a person, I just want Dallas to finally solve this issue through the draft instead of scrambling through the trash pool and pluggin in some other teams reject and making them the starter. People keep saying FS is not a position that deserves a high pick, but when we are losing games and missing out on a chance at the SuperBowl because the FS can't cover and gets beat deep on a regular basis, then it is a problem tha needs to be addressed with the best possible player. We have not done that yet.

He had more tackles, the same amount of sacks, one less INT and more passes defended last year than he did in what would arguably be his best year in 2004. Is it really that big of a gamble?

A little hearsay from a regular poster at ES. Poster is CPortJGibbs89, and from what little I recall of him, is a straight poster:

Some people on this site know me and that I dont come to this site to say a brother of another friend of a mother said this..... But for once I actually have a little info so if you wanna believe it thats fine if not doesnt really bother me... My brother is friends with Ken Hamlins brother, my bro just told me that the cowboys are not trying to let Hamlin leave without signing. If you want I will keep you posted if I hear anymore news but it sounds like the boys really want him.....
