You couldn't drag me into the type of plane Ford was flying. I fly because I have to but I don't like planes especially single engine planes I refuse to fly in them. I have a friend who flies his own private plane and he's never been able to talk me into flying with him. My family and friends think I fear flying and I say it all the time that I don't fear flying I love to fly it's crashing I fear.

loading him into the ambulance

I play a lot of golf and have seen a couple of people loaded into an ambulance on the course one due to a nervous breakdown after missing a 2 footer and the other a heart attack. There was a bear that ventured onto the course near the Rose Bowl a year ago that chased a few golfers that could have gotten ugly.

I think more people die each year in automobile accidents than plane crashes, .. it is just when a plane crashes it is a large number.

Air travel is safer than by automobile, .. not even close.

The National Safety Council compiled an odds-of-dying table, which further illustrates the relative risks of flying and driving safety. It calculated the odds of dying in a motor vehicle accident to be 1 in 98 for a lifetime. For air and space transport (including air taxis and private flights), the odds were 1 in 7,178 for a lifetime, according to the table.

Statistically speaking, flying is far safer than driving. However, it may feel more dangerous because risk perception is based on more than facts, according to David Ropeik, risk communication instructor at Harvard School of Public Health. Driving affords more personal control, making it feel safer. In addition, plane crashes are catastrophic, killing more people at once, which grabs more attention and makes people more sensitive to them. Car crashes happen every day and spread the loss over time, making their combined effects less noticeable.

Naturally more people die in car crashes the roads are packed with cars and cars crash every day. You're having to deal with drunk drivers, unlicensed drivers, police pursuits and irresponsible idiots on the road who act like every street and highway is a speedway. At least with a car crash it's sudden unlike plane crashes where you have time to think about it as you plummet 500 mph to the ground. I was involved in a crash landing years ago as a passenger and it's one of the most terrifying experiences you'll go through. You experience several minutes where you think you're going to die. They instruct you to assume the crash position with your head down between your knees. The first thought I had was I don't want to be found like this. :(

It's not just mechanical problems you have to worry about on planes it's the passengers on board with you. You have terrorists and people who suffer inflight meltdowns that add another element of concern with air travel.

That it is a low percentage of incidents. Also, people can suffer meltdowns in cars and in traffic. Road rage incidents are also low percentage incidents, but they do occur.

True, but anytime you board a plane if it goes down it can take over 300 people in one swoop. We risk our lives everyday getting behind the wheel of a car. I own several exotic sports cars but I don't race around I drive with caution. You're having to trust a lot of people when you're driving. As for road rage LA is probably the road rage capital of the world with all the traffic and freeways.

I agree. It is always the other persons fault.

Every one of my landings is a crash landing, but I don't bother telling my passengers to assume the brace position.
