I'll be done with it in about an hour. It is the best of the 7 books IMO.

I haven't even had a chance to start reading it yet beyond the first few lines. I'd love to pull an all-nighter and read it, but I'd be regretting that about 7am when the baby woke up.

I shouldn't have read those few lines...argh....want to read...must resist.....

I haven't read a single one of the books, but I have enjoyed the movies...

It's funny, my 13 yo asked if I could get him the book over a month ago. He was with his arsehole other father at the time. We told his other dad if he could get the book he could take credit. No dice.

My daughter called and said she couldn't do any more prison time with her other dad (8 yo). We go pick her up to get some time with Grandma Honey (my mother).

We have to go through Tyler and stop at Barnes & Noble. They have the book. We pick it up and go through the line. We get through the front and the girl says "Are you on the Harry Potter List?"

I say "No, but it was out for anyone to pick up... I leave with this book or it is front page news in the Tyler Morning Telegraph tomorrow morning."

My son is reading it now... ;)

I can't do that. If someone else wants to, that's up to them. If someone really wants to know and PMs me I will say via PM.

It was extremely well written. Up to tonight I liked Book 5 the best because it rang true. Harry was 15 and he was angry at everyone. I felt she did a great job of portraying a troubled 15 year boy.

This book starts fast and it never slows down. I really enjoyed it. Can't believe I actually pulled off reading it in one day but I did.

I woke up at 12:30 in the morning and on a whim decided to go buy it. So I got home about 2:00 in the morning and started to read. I got tired and grabbed 2 hours of sleep from about 4:30 to 6:30. My wife and kids couldn't believe I had gone and bought it.

They really wanted to read it and I planned to finish it tomorrow, but I honestly couldn't put it down. I'm tired and my eyes are really tired, but I probably won't sleep for a while. Too wound up.

I've never read any of the books or seen any of the movies. So at what age should I allow my little one to read the first book? He is to young now but I was wondering down the line when he gets older.

I'd say 10 or 11.

My Aunt Marci is really funny. She won't read them or let her kids or grandkids even talk about them around her. She is leery of witchcraft.

These books are not about witchcraft, they're about good versus evil.

My brother and sister in law won't let their kids read the books or see the movies because of the witchcraft also.

I had ordered the book from Amazon a few months in advance, knowing my daughter would want it. By that time I had gone ahead and read the series through. Pretty good, certainly entertaining. I feel the last few books are really a big large, and I'm not sure what the story gains by the size.

The book itself they shipped on Wednesday by 2 day UPS, and then they didn't deliver until late Saturday (UPS doesn't deliver weekends.. this was a special deal Amazon arranged). I took the book because I'm the fastest reader and I finished it sometime around 2:30am. Now it's my daughter's book. The box they shipped it in was special and says, white on red stripe: ATTENTION MUGGLES: Do NOT DELIVER OR OPEN BEFORE JULY 21.

Nice read. She isn't the prose stylist Michael Chabon is, but who is?
Her plots are clear enough a child can read them, and the person.. I forget who.. who pointed out that they're mystery novels disguised as popular fantasy is dead on.

David.

Great Read IMO.

I echo the others and say it was the best of the series.

I too could not put it down for more than a few minutes.

Kind of stinks in a way.

Normally I will try to stretch our or milk a book. By that I mean I normally will read about an hour or more at night and put it down. I like to make it last for a few days.

This one I just could not do that with. I read so fast that before I realized it I was already past the half way point.

By 10 or 11 I expect my kid to be exposed to something much more dangerous than witchcraft just by attending public schools.

It was a good read. Real good. I couldn't put it down. I went out at midnight with my 13 year old sister to get a pair of them. When I got back, I was too tired to read.

But I spent part of my Saturday reading the book - and finishing it. Its sort of sad that the series is ending, as I am a big fan.

The movie for this is going to be awesome. All of the fighting scenes, particularly the last one, is going to be phenomenal.

I gotta agree it will be a good movie. I doubt that they can do a 2 and a half hour one for this book. I am fine with that though as this one had great stories throughout.

Nothing short of amazing.

Steven King (who I consider a dreadful writer when it comes to horror, but pretty stout on non-horror stories) said something about he doesn't feel a writer creates a story, but rather uncovers it to the best of his/her ability, something like an archaeologist.

Whatever Muse provided JK Rowling with this story only comes out every several hundreds of years, and could not have chosen a better person to have honed this story. I now see why it took 5 years to get the first book finished - Rowling must have spent that time uncovering a world where she literally had a back story/subplot to every little thing, with all of it being tied up at the end with beautiful, simple ease.

I agree with what someone said about this being a mystery novel in fantasy settings, but I feel that description doesn't do justice to the 7 part story we have encountered (for an example of Rowling's attention to detail, I urge everyone familiar with this series to think long and hard about the number of books she planned). The story I just finished and have spent so many years following is one of the greatest books I have read, and I have read a few good ones.

I feel utterly priveledged that I was alive when these books were produced, and was in the right situation that I could enjoy them. I always feared that I would be disappointed or sad at the conclusion of the seventh book, but in a way that I can't help feel the author intended, the conclusion and its affect on the reader create a serenity espoused by one of the major motifs (figure which one out, it's in the title), that I will have no problem with the lack of future books.

I finished it last night... it took me longer because I got it on audiobook and went through it while I commuted and exercised, etc...

Easily the best of the series. I don't think I've ever read a book before where I actually broke out and cheered... and with this book I did that several times.

I really think there were NO disappointments with this book... which is amazing when you think of how high expectations were for it. Everything unfolded as well as a fan could have hoped for... every question/secret was answered... every hint laid throughout the other books was revealed in its full meaning.

I don't mean to say it was a "perfect" book or anything. It bogged down for a couple chapters in the middle... she always has a few overly-cheesy lines and moments, and has a few plot twists that are a little "too convenient." But none of those small imperfections are enough to detract from a great closing chapter to this tale.

To do it justice, the movie will have to be about 4 hours long at least. :D

The only thing I wished would have been added was to give us a little something at the very end to let us know about a few characters that survived, who wound up being the full time Minister of magic as only a Temp one was named, who wound up being the new headmaster/mistress at Hogwarts.

I would also liked to know what the major characters did for a living afterwards.

One or two paragraphs could have been added to answer some of those questions.

I kinda thought about this, but I was very pleased with the epilogue. I decided it didn't much matter to me the specifics.

I would assume that the headmaster would be McGonagall. Seems kinda obvious.

BTW - can you edit the title of the thread to state that spoilers are in here?

I agree with all this. The book dragged a little while they were on the run, but it was necessary for some things that happened later.

Completely agree with you as far as cheering goes. The only book that came close was GOF, where I was an emotional wreck at the end of the book. In this one, there were about 5 chapters strung together where I was a blubbering mess (luckily I was alone when I read it). At the end, just before the chapter titled 'King's Cross,' I was in bad shape. And then I just grinned for the rest of the book. Been grinning ever since.
