Has a team ever accomplished this?

Best case scenario....weeden goes 0-3 (check). Cassel goes 3-3.....romo comes back to a 5-6 team and loses his first game back

Romo is eligible to play in Week 11 against the Dolphins. That's four more games.

Teams have lost their starting QB for all or part of the season and won the SB but I can't recall any team losing their starting QB, #1 RB, #1 WR and #1 corner from the previous season for all or part of the season and winning it all. If that wasn't bad enough the Cowboys lost their most promising pass rusher in the opener for several weeks along with their second leading receiver in 2015 a couple of weeks later for the entire season. I've been following the Cowboys since the 72 season and can't remember any season where they've taken as big a hit at key positions that this team has taken. They were able to get by without Scandrick, Dez and Gregory the first 2 weeks but the loss of Romo has sent the team into an 0-3 tailspin.

With the running game not being close to what it was last season the Cowboys are too dependent on Romo to overcome his loss. With the deficiencies the team has they need solid play from the QB position to win games. When you're struggling to run the ball consistently and don't have a solid defense that can win games you don't have much of a chance with most backup QBs. Hard to coverup for the weaknesses of a backup QB with WR's who are having trouble winning one on one battles and an inconsistent running game. You can't be asking your backup QB to win games if that was their strength they wouldn't be carrying clipboards.

I'm not thinking ahead so far as to concern myself with Romo being in the Super Bowl. Hell, I'll be tickled pink if we somehow manage to win a division title. Actually, I think this is the perfect year to keep expectations humble.

Lost their all star QB and major other pieces for what's going to be 8-10 games and recovered to win SB when all/most returned?

I ask because I called it for us this year. Romo wins us SB as SBmvp.
I just want to know my chances.

If you like our chances that much going into the season, then I don't think you should consider it that far fetched right now either. We're still in decent shape in both the division and WC races... We probably only have 4 more games without Romo, and all of those games are very winnable, even in our current state... So I think we'll win a couple games before Romo gets back, and once he gets back, I'm confident we'll win a minimum of 5 out of our last 7 games... I think we'll still win 9-10 games, and make the playoffs... Once we do, the injuries could end up being a little bit of a blessing, because at least Romo, Dez, and even Hardy and McClain should be a little bit healthier and a little fresher than they might be if they had played in all 16 games... Another good sign is what Romo said to Brady, he's obviously still planning on making you look like a genius come February...

Despite what everyone thinks based off of last year, I have no question that Garrett and Linehan are NOT running by nature coaches.

They do not believe in it.

They might publically say they do, periodically, based on situation, but overall the Gillman/Coryell derivatives are not running based, have never been running based and never will be running based.

We experienced something pretty special last season. Things just clicked.

The OL was great, Murray knew how to run behind it. Perfect storm. No question.

Sometimes when coaching, if things keep happening, you get out of the way and let the players be.

There is no doubt this team was in a groove offensively.

The idea was to take that philosophy and move forward, never minding the fact that we eliminated Murray and his role in the chemistry of the perfect storm.

We would be 2-3 right now with Murray. Only we'd have another horrendous contract on the books that will negatively effect us going forward.

This season isn't lost because of the decision to let Murray go. It's what they decided to do in place of him that has helped lead us to this. And, of course, the QB going down and our genius front office having Brandon Weeden as next man up.

My stance has been consistent all along. Before the season, I had the Cowboys missing the playoffs after a hard luck year. When you lose Dez week 1 and Romo the next week for an extended period of time it only reinforced that belief.

To me this is a wasted season. Hopefully these decision makers do something about QB and RB, even WR in the offseason so they maybe have a chance next year if God doesn't hate us.

I think Ear Morrall did it twice. First replacing Johnny U and getting to SB III and again in the '72 Dolphins.

That was during a different era.

Yes, back then with no FA and a team had a players rights forever if they wanted.
QB depth was not a big problem, as it is today.
Look at Dallas and their QB's over the years.
LeBaron - Meredith, then Morton, which then became Morton - Staubach, then Staubach - White.

Well, here is a team that won a Sb, in 1987 with backups....Commanders.
Schroeder was the QB, but Doug Williams started and played in the SB.
George Rogers, and Kelvin Bryant were the top RB's. but timmy Smith had a one hit wonder game of 200 or so yards.
They still had the posse for WR's in Sanders / Clark / Monk.

Now I am not sure what the deal was during the season, but Schroeder? And the RB's, were a RBBC in a sense. Maybe due to injuries, not sure.

Ok soooo slight adjustment, Cassel goes 3-4 and Romo goes a perfect 4-0. Everything else stays the same. Romo goes a perfect 10-0 to win the SB.

Wild card teams have certainly won the super bowl, so it really comes down to making the playoffs.

Would be tough to lose a top QB and WR for an extended period of time during the salary cap era and still make the playoffs. Losing a JAG or above average QB is different because he's not costing the team as much (well, hopefully). However, just adding Hardy to the ATL and NO games might make this team 4-1. Adding the other absentees on defense almost certainly would, but unfortunately there's no getting those games back. Now the margin for error is just that much thinner.

If this team gets in the playoffs with, say, a 8-1 or 7-2 record under Tony, I'd like their super bowl chances a lot more than any other probable wild card team this season. More than several of the division winners as well. Of course, that's asking a lot in a parity driven league. You hate to give away so many games in a league where contests are usually close and a few bounces can make a difference.

The season isn't wasted, not yet anyway. Our rivals' poor play alone is helping to keep us alive. It's not unreasonable to believe that Dallas has a real chance to end up with the East crown for a 2nd straight year.

He'll be eligible in week 11 but those who are marking that game as his return are being premature not even the Cowboys know if he'll be 100% by then.

That was during a different era.

Morrell never attempted more than 19 passes in the 12 games he played during the 72 season. He had 3 straight games where he never had a passer rating better than 52.4. The Dolphins success was built around their 3 headed monster running attack and their no name defense.
