6 or 7 out of 10 for me.

It has a *LOT* of good movie elements, and a lot of stuff going for it. The over all story is decent.

What holds it back from being simply one of the greatest movies is the fact that the main character.. well.. has NO character to speak of what so ever. You don't get a backstory, motives, nothing. He's just a walking plot device you never learn anything about. He barely speaks. All you know about him is he can drive cars well, kill people, and smile awkwardly.

The entire movie I was waiting for some kind of reveal towards the end on just who the hell this guy is, why he can do any of the stuff he does with ease, but you never get it.

Now if this movie was to get a sequel where you actually get to learn about this guy, as a 2 part deal it might be one of the best set of movies around, because it really did have a *LOT* going for it. But without knowing anything about the main character it just comes off as random.

There was also a scene near the end, where he wears a mask.. for no reason, at all. And I never figured out why that mask existed cause it's not used for anything.

Anyone who seen the movie also think the entire sequence with him in the mask was dumb? He had no reason to be wearing it.

I can't help but feel like this is directed at me. It's a movie and opinions of it are subjective. How I feel about it doesn't mean everyone else will or has to.

I watched a little of Valhalla Rising and fell asleep. That's not to say it isn't great but it's the type of movie you need to know about before you watch it.

It wasn't directed at you. I have friends that are way over the top with their praise of both Gosling and the movie itself, so if it was directed at anyone, it's at them. A lot of them are female and just drooling fans of Gosling and so have dubbed Drive the greatest movie ever made, or a close runner up to The Notebook.

That mask was shown early in the film. That was his movie mask. That was just to show his transformation into the fantasy character he was becoming.

I agree with him on the mask thing, I didn't think it was necessary at all and there are so many other ways to accomplish that transformation idea you mentioned that this totally random mask he decides to put back on for 10 minutes for no reason.

That mask isn't random. That's the one he puts on to become the guy in the movies as a stuntman. I think it's there to link the movie character to the one he was becoming. To me when I first saw it I just took it as there was a line he just crossed to become this badarse killer driver and the mask was just there to show something had switched in his brain.

I know where the mask comes from as far as a plot device and I even get that it could be him crossing the line.

I just don't think it was well executed if that was the goal. It came across as cartoonish to me in a movie that was balancing everything so well up until that point.

This pretty much.

Again though, I'd suggest this movie for anyone to watch, it just has some large flaws that hold it back from being absolutely amazing.

Great movie. One of the better movies I've seen in the past year or so.

I find it hard that people say the movie isn't about anything???

It reminds me of old movies..before the dawn of crazy special effects that instead of adding to, detracted from the acting/storytelling. I think there are about 10 Michael Bay jokes in there somewhere.

Saw this recently.

Very good movie but I'd say it would have been more successful had they sold it as a drama...not an action/racing movie.

It was stylish and the music was killer.

Big Ryan Gosling fan. Wish he would do more mainstream movies but I know he prefers Indies.
