Well, there are going to be qualifiers ... because it is training camp and preseason. We've seen training camp heroes come and go, so it's hard to say he's made the 53. He's off to a good start, though, and that's all we can really expect at the moment. We certainly can't say that about every player.
Yeah, it’s just camp, and he wasn’t playing starters at Seattle, but that ability to track the ball in the air, locate it and make the catch is real, no matter what time of the year it is and who is covering him. That is something guys are just born with or not. Brown was.
And it wasn’t just the Seattle game where he showed that ability. He has shown it all camp… to the point where the team gave him some snaps with the 1’s. Not only that but he showed it all last year in games for Georgia Southern. It is what he does. He has proven that plenty.
One preseason game - two fantastic touchdown catches.
And while he doesn’t have a lot of speed, he has an elite 10 yard split, so his burst is really good, meaning he get off at the snap very well and he gets separation on his cuts. There have been many WR’s that were really good even though their 40 yard dash was average.
Just a couple of seasons ago I loved Jaxon Smith Njigba coming out of tOSU. People said he was too slow and he wouldn’t be very good. Well… he had an elite 10 yard split and 3-cone drill, which told anyone paying attention that he was going to be able to get separation on his routes.
Now after his offensive player of the year award, everybody can see that now.
Jerry Rice famously ran a 4.6 40, and Anquan Boldin ran a 4.72.
Brown obviously didn’t have the college career of those guys, but they all ran an average or below average 40 time.
Speaking for myself, Brown has a few things that I have always looked for in receivers: great hands (hand-eye coordination), great body control, and an ability to track the ball in the air. Those things tend to be either a have or a not have. It isn’t really taught (or learned). He also is already very good hand fighting with the DB and shows good toughness… both important as well IMO.
Brown just has those innate abilities, which would make me want to give him every chance to become a good player. And I believe the Cowboys coaches will want to as well.
Will he make the 53 man roster? We don’t know for sure but if I had to guess right now, I’d say yeah, he makes it with room to spare unless he gets injured.
Luckily for everyone involved, nobody has to make that decision right now and we all can just wait to see what he does the rest of preseason. I think he’s going to continue showing that he belongs.
No matter what he does… it’s going to be interesting.
