Nice edit.

Bringing up stats in this argument still shows a lack of understanding of the defense though.

Hatcher has been our best DL for a few years now, and putting up 4 sacks a year as a 34 DE is solid. Spencer has also been a very good 34 OLB for us, imo.. so an argument can be made for both of them performing very well for us in recent years. Don't understand why we always have to knock one of our own players just to praise another.

Show me where I "knocked" Hatcher. The poster claimed that, if you throw out last season, Hatcher had "superior" seasons in 2010 and 2011. There's simply no evidence to support that. And don't pretend DEs can't rack up tackles -- C. Campbell had 63 tackles last season, 22 more than Hatcher had in 2010 and 2011 combined.

Saying Hatcher isn't in Spencer's league is knocking one player to praise another.. when in reality, both have performed very well for us the past few years at their respective positions.

Also, continuing with the lack of understanding theme, I never said DE's can't get a good amount of tackles. Heck, Hatcher had over 50 last season for us.

I simply said that if you look at most all 34 defenses every year, 95 percent of the time your OLB's are going to be the ones racking up many more tackles/sacks than your 34 DE's because of their responsibilities in the defense.

Therefore, posting stats as an argument for why one player is better than the other is illogical.

Yeah I saw Hatcher's tweet immediately when he sent it, and replied to him, asking if he is planning to retire?

No answer.

He's 30+ in an NFL that is moving toward no longer paying his age or his position big money. I think he sees the writing on the wall at this point, even if he is going about it in a drama-queen passive aggressive kind of way.

This.

Once the season starts he'll be fine.

A few things here....

1) it was insane to bring Spencer into this discussion. certifiably so. that agenda item should have waited.

2) hatcher has not been our best dl the past few seasons. he was our best dl last year. singular, as in once ever. in 2011 he probably would have been the best had he been healthy all year. but he missed games and finished 3rd on the team in tackles by a DL. ratliff still draws the double teams and is the best player of that group.

3) arguing about scheme stuff is pointless. hatcher is a 3rd down guy and plays in more 4 man lines than most. he has been a rotational guy on running downs.

4) i really like hatcher and hope he gets extended

as to the 'why' of the tweet i am guessing hatcher's agent asked for an extension and was told none would be forthcoming. now hatcher is saying if i have to play out this underpaid year i am going to take my talents elsewhere... like back home.

Not really weird. If this is the last year of his contract, then yeah, it's his last year.

Retweeting folks could mean anything. He's from LA and Rob is there, so he could end up there. But if he has a career year, then Cowboys will cut the check.

I dunno, normally I'd agree but you don't say "last year" because you're in the final year of your current deal - especially if you're one of the better players on the defense.

If I had to guess I would think he's using logic ..

1) He's in the last year of his contract
2) He will be 31 years old before the season starts
3) The team was well over the cap so they had to restructure contracts of several players, but not with him.
4) Potential young replacements on the team

well, yea, I can easily understand why he would "think" it...but there really is no reason to state it publicly

his best friend on the team was spears, he just saw a move away from the scheme he was drafted to play and he is being refused an extension.

this is him letting it out that he sees the writing on the wall....

hatcher's kid is a good, local youth football player... hate to lose him to louisiana.

I think Hatcher is probably right. This will likely be his last year in Dallas but not because he is a bad player. This is likely about Tyrone Crawford.

I thought it was strange last year when Stephen Jones was asked to list the core players on the team. He throws out the usual suspects Romo, Witten, Ware ect. But then he mentions Crawford's name in that list. Everything I've heard indicates to me the the organization is very high on Crawford. When you consider Ratliff still has several years left on his contract and is of similar age to Hatcher (Ratliff is 31 and Hatcher is 30) he is probably the one you are going to keep and Hatcher is probably the odd man out.

The move just makes sense financially. Even if Crawford is not going to be quite as good as Hatcher is right away he is likely going to be the much better value in terms of the cap required as he is playing on his rookie contract. Hatcher is without a doubt going to command starter money. I could see him making a little less then Canty made. That money is badly needed to address other areas of the team.

This kinda reminds me of the Greg Ellis/Anthony Spencer situation. Greg knew the writing was on the wall. The financial incentives when you have a guy playing on a rookie deal are just too strong.

The writing is on the wall fro next years salary cap. Isn't Dallas approximately $ 40 million over the projected amount for 2014.

I think he is disappointed that he has not been approached about an extension while an inferior player will make 50% more than he has over the past 3 seasons this year alone (Spencer). I can't say that I blame him. I do hope we manage to extend Hatcher halfway through the season to a cap-friendly deal if he continues to shine. It would have to be a short deal and would have to be for a reasonable sum. Maybe 3 years, $11M or so with a $3M SB. You just can't overpay age in this league and get stuck with all the dead money.
so hatcher is a superior player to spencer. thats funny and april fools has passed

It's true that the salary cap is an issue here but I think Hatcher would be likely gone even if we were projected to be 20 million under the cap. Using your space efficiently makes sense no matter what the situation is.

Did he forget he plays for Jerry Jones. 30+ is when it's time to get paid!

LOL....funny but true

I would bet with a couple more teams switching to the 3-4 he has trade value at least we could get a 6th for him.

Ratliff was not our best DL in 2011.. he was possibly our best rag doll though.

If you throw out last year, Hatcher's last two years have been superior to any of Spencer's years. I also think Hatcher is much more likely to repeat last year's play than Spencer is to repeat his. Hatcher is one of the biggest bargains in the whole league.

I saw you post something similar a while back and I was skeptical.

Pretty shocked to see that he graded out 4th best for 3-4 DEs.

Last year, 10th.

Personally, I'm a little embarrassed to not have taken notice of the guy to a greater extent.

He graded out as the best defensive player on the team last year. Kind of a statement to how unnoticed that position is.
