The catch was what it was......we had a chance on the ensuing drive-that's my pissed moment from that game. Series of players not doing their job, we could've scored
Right up until I saw the ball tumble out of Danny whites hand, I thought we would win that game despite the catch

I remember reading Montana said he was actually throwing it away.
There was still time left and as noted above Drew was stopped by a horse collar or we may have pulled it out

I refer to the game as The Catch and The Fumble. No game branded 2 QBs more than that game. One was branded with a C for Clutch throughout their career and the other was branded with a C for Choke throughout their career.

The Catch. :(

I was 11 and my heart was broke into a million pieces.

True story: I watched that game (age 10) at my friend Todd Meyer's house. I remember taking his Rubic's Cube and smashing it (football spike style) on his parents' hardwood kitchen floor when Danny White fumbled to essentially end the game. The cube smashed into about a million pieces and it left a very visible divot in their floor. I vaguely remember his mom saying something like "it's time Lane went home" before shuffling me off to the car.

The demolished Rubic's Cube and the damaged floor were perfect metaphors for my psyche after my first major sports disappointment.

I believe it. I sincerely doubt they practiced that play. Ever. I give Montana small props for the pass but Clark huge props for elevating and grabbing that high toss. In my opinion, the play was totally unscripted and Clark creating a franchise legacy-defining moment.

I was 17 at the time and wasn't so mad at them giving up "the catch" but when we got the ball back, Drew Pearson caught a deep pass and almost broke away for the game winner and then Danny White's strip fumble by Dwaine Board with :51 left around the 50 yd line. That had me questioning my existence.:mad::angry::angry:

Brings up the question: Most heartbreaking Cowboys losses:
A) SB V
B) SB XIII
C) The Catch
D) SB X
E) 94 Championship Game
F) Giants Playoff Loss
G) Ice Bowl
H) Packers loss two years ago.

These are in no particular order.

OK. For some reason I always thought that was the last one and it was a long horrible struggle for years after. Funny how memory works.

Not your fault. For years it has been the sexy take by the mediots that "the catch" aka "the fluke" game launched a dynasty and killed another. They were only half right.

Two things about that game for me:

1 - it should be called the "horse collar" (although it wasn't a penalty at the time)...if Drew breaks that tackle at around midfield we are at least in FG range to win it at the end.

2 - I still to this day don't know how we lost a game with SIX turnovers from our defense!?! Frankly our offense lost us that game as we had the six point lead with the ball and driving and in the throws of running down/out the clock. Offense needed to seal the deal and didn't on a relatively routine 3rd down conversion.

SMH.
I still remember how that drive stalled. we were moving the ball and running out the clock and then Doug Donley dropped a 3rd and 7 catch that would have had us in FG range to seal the game. I remember when he dropped it I thought "oh no they are going to drive for the winning TD" and they did. I just kept hoping the Everson Walls would get one more pick to win the game but it wasn't meant to be. That was a heartbreaking loss for sure because I thought we had it won numerous times.

oh yes...I recall the sequence well...was going off that Donley was even in the line up there as Hill and Butch were going off along with Cosbie...was incredulous it was "White Lightning" who got the call to clinch it there...for me the most painful part was the sack fumble at the end. Not only did it highlight White's propensity to hold the ball low (with one hand) and for too long, but the guard (#65, Kurt Pederson???), who was supposed to be the strongest dude on our team (even more so than Randy) just got bum rushed by the Niners D lineman right into White's face...smh. I thought FOR SURE we were coming back to win it once Drew's catch got us to mid field with plenty of time left and timeouts in hand...that was WAY worse than the Clark catch for me. lol...fun discussion even though I have no idea why we're doing this to ourselves ;)

What is wrong with you people? What could the possible benefit be of bringing this up right now?

I swear, some of y'all just love wallowing in misery.

Danny White's "fumble" was an incomplete forward pass. I was furious that the refs got that wrong. The refs also missed a PI on Doug Cosbie in the endzone earlier in the game that kept the Cowboys from a TD and made them settle for a field goal.

To add insult to injury, the most obnoxious kid at my high school was a 49er fan who wouldn't shut up about the game.
