Have the Cowboys forgotten about the pass rush?

O-line was an important issue and we have addressed that and we still are with the Colombo negotiations. But what about one more pass rusher? D-Ware should do well under Phillips, but Ellis' recovery is not a given. Even if Ellis comes back 100%, we didn't exactly scare opposing QBs when he was healthy last season. We need another pass rusher. Everyone assumes we will automatically get pressure now that Wade is in town, but the more talented pass rushers, the better our D will be. Jerry seems to have forgotten our anemic attempts at getting to the QB over the last decade.

we talked to alot of DE/OLB tweeners during Senior Bowl week and the Combine, we're still looking for another one

We already have pass rushers on this team...we just need to utilize them.

Also, this draft is pretty deep in pass rushers and OLB/DE tweeners.

The biggest pickup for the pass-rush is Wade Phillips himself. We'll blitz literally twice as much as we did last season. That should improve some things on the pass-rush front. On top of that I think Wade wants to pick up a first day OLB. Beyond that though, he'd probably like to see what he can do with what we have on staff. People don't think much of Spears and Canty, but he may turn them in to Olshansky and Castillo.

Agree with these 2 posts wholeheartedly.

A lot could depend on Phillips evaluation of the players he has on defense and what he thinks of the ability in his system. As for Jones I don't think he has forgotten about the defense or the team’s ability to put pressure on the QB which is why Phillips is here.

Burnett and Carpenter are guys with quickness and speed. Both have shown flashes of being able to pass rush. Add Hatcher and Ratliff to the mix and I think its more likely that this year they stand pat and see what Wade can do with schemes.

Wade addressed to Ellis directly when the two first spoke, "Ellis said the first thing Wade said to me was, they didn't rush you enough."

We need to find out what Carp can do before we invest in another big Free Agent contract. IMO

We also do not know as of yet if Phillips sees Carpenter as an OLB or ILB. Parcells saw him as an inside guy Phillips views may be very different.

Theres a little thing coming up on the horizon known as the NFL DRAFT!!!!! Ever heard of it? We will most likely see 1 or 2 picks that can get after the QB because the team interviewed alot of those kind of players at the combine.

before you carry that notion too far, BP said he saw Carp as a player capable of playing multiple positions

True but he also talked about him being moved to the inside. All I'm saying is what Parcells thought at this stage means nothing it all comes down to how Phillips views the players and how he sees them fitting into his system.

I hope that is the mindset on draft day. I guess I'm just not convinced that guys like Canty, Spears and Burnett will improve just because we have a coach with a great defensive plan and proven track record with talented players, the key word being talented.

No we didnt.

Wade Phillips will handle that. He already said he thinks guys like Ellis, Carp and Burnett can compliment Ware in his system.

Besides that we could still draft a pass rusher.

fair enough, just clarifying that BP said he was moving Carp inside because he felt that he had the ability to play there, as well as at OLB

That seems to be the consensus. It's just hard to believe that BP and Zim were so ******** that they couldn't get more production out of these guys. I hope you're right, tomson. I hope it was the coaching/scheme and not the players.

I heard a great quote from Spears yesterday on Sirius...

"I am real excited, he [Wade] runs a system where we don't just stand around for 17 games and take a beating."

1. They literally told the DEs not to rush the passer.
2. They didn't blitz.
3. They never tried anything to confuse the O-line.

Basically they did nothing to help the players out and relied solely on them winning their matchups. That sounds great and all and may even sound "tough," but it's just plain stupid in my opinion.

Whooo! A shot at the BP school of defense. I feel better already, knowing that the players themselves feel that they were being held back. To be honest, that's the first quote I've seen from a player admitting to what the fans have been saying all along.
