Have the Cowboys forgotten about the pass rush?

1. They literally told the DEs not to rush the passer.
2. They didn't blitz.
3. They never tried anything to confuse the O-line.

Basically they did nothing to help the players out and relied solely on them winning their matchups. That sounds great and all and may even sound "tough," but it's just plain stupid in my opinion.

Yep. It's amazing how BP thought he still had Taylor and Carson at LB. He just never stopped living in the past, I guess.

This hurts but I'll say it anyway.....

I heard a great quote from Spears yesterday on Sirius...

"I am real excited, he [Wade] runs a system where we don't just stand around for 17 games and take a beating."
Did anyone get a recap on that?

agreed , too much wishful thinking. We need to get another pass rusher draft or FA.We already have some good ones but depth has never ruined a team as far as i know

I would have listen to the whole thing but I was running late to work.

It was on the air @ 10 am EST on channel 124 Sirius (if that helps find it).

When they pick up, ask to speak with Anthony Spencer.

I'm slowly coming back around to Spencer, my Combine fix is starting to wear off :D

Shaun Phillips part deuce?

i expect us to take a lb at some point with al leaving but not early. we just draft6ed a guy to replace ellis last year and the reason he played inside early was ellis played better than expected at lb.at the end of the season when he got his chance carp played well outside. goig to a one gap scheme will be huge for spears, canty, and hatch. there's a huge difference in just rushing the passer and covering 2 gaps.plus we will get more ou of the inside guys and roy with blitzes. not to mention to mention more twists and stunts will help alot too/ i think we will take a lb but i don't see it as a early round need unless someone special falls and there are no wares or merrimans in this draft

Nice comparison. He'll be better than Phillips in that he can contribute immediately, because he's more of a finished product. I'd love Spencer in the 1st, but if Dwayne Bowe is still there I hope we take him. That'd leave Woodley or Robison in the 2nd or DeOssie in the 3rd/4th. All of them would be great additions.

Spears was called out for a lack of effort- so anything he says I pretty much ignore. Its interesting who has publicly made noise and who has been quiet.
Pass rush from DEs is a bonus in the 3-4; its not the main event. And lets be honest about our DEs- even in pure passing downs when they were expected to rush the passer they sucked. LBs are the ones to apply the pressure in the 3-4.

That doesn't make any sense.

If I were a DE and told not to rush the pass-rusher, then I'd complain as well.

True to an extent, but I think Parcells just led the lemmings off the cliff with this one.

The 3-4 DEs weren't DEs in passing downs (i.e., 3rd downs). We switched to the nickel.

The biggest pickup for the pass-rush is Wade Phillips himself. We'll blitz literally twice as much as we did last season. That should improve some things on the pass-rush front. On top of that I think Wade wants to pick up a first day OLB. Beyond that though, he'd probably like to see what he can do with what we have on staff. People don't think much of Spears and Canty, but he may turn them in to Olshansky and Castillo.

One thing to keep in mind though is; when you blitz, your DBs must cover. That is something we had a MAJOR problem with last year once we lost a pass rusher and were forced to blitz for pressure.

I guess I need to be more specific: I ignore spears for since he was specifically targeting BP since BP had called him out for lack of effort. So anything he SAYS needs to be looked at with that in mind.
We were not always in the nickel when the DEs were supposed to rush the passer. Only in the basic formation were they meant to occupy and watch for the run. there were many plays when they were sent to get the QB and they sucked.

O-line was an important issue and we have addressed that and we still are with the Colombo negotiations. But what about one more pass rusher? D-Ware should do well under Phillips, but Ellis' recovery is not a given. Even if Ellis comes back 100%, we didn't exactly scare opposing QBs when he was healthy last season. We need another pass rusher. Everyone assumes we will automatically get pressure now that Wade is in town, but the more talented pass rushers, the better our D will be. Jerry seems to have forgotten our anemic attempts at getting to the QB over the last decade.

The bottom line is that if you spend 1-2 decades trying to find a great Pass rusher from dE or LB, you will end up with a crapload of guys who play the same position, guys you are still paying huge bucks to, and you'll end up with a sorry team by the time you finally find that guy.

We've spent enough draft picks and money looking for Charles Haley....forget it. At this point, we'd be idiots to spend another top draft pick on LB or DE since we currently have 4 first round draft picks at De and LB, along with plenty of other 2,3,4 picks....If we spent another top pick on OLB or DE this year, I'd scream.

No we didnt.

Wade Phillips will handle that. He already said he thinks guys like Ellis, Carp and Burnett can compliment Ware in his system.

Besides that we could still draft a pass rusher.
Which tweener guy would like for the Cowboys to draft.

I myself like Lamar Woodley, from Michigan, but he was just used as a DE, but I do see a tweener type guy.

Correct remember the Titans game, where they were told to contain Young, and not rush the passer much.

So it had much to do with the scheme Parcells, wasn't convinced that they could really buy into his "2-gap" 3-4 system.

Then the Colts game, they brought all sorts of pressure on Peyton Manning that won the game for us.

It was Parcells' style of play not to make many mistakes on defense and it cost us some games.

I'm a big fan of Wade Phillips' defense but his defense has a high risk/reward factor but hey what defense doesn't.

How many of them did you see play last season I saw: Woodley, Moss, who was a big reason why they beat Ohio State in the Championship game, Moses, and Crowder but didn't see the rest of them.

Obviously I like Woodley (see sig ;))

But like Summer, I think just replied, there is a long list of tweeners that are available that wouldn't disappoint me.

I for one, am really high on Wade and what he can scheme up so in my eyes it really doest matter who we get to play LB.

The guy had everyone in SD's front 7 playing at a high level.
