The bolded part really shoots down the notion that Dallas has replaced TO.

depends on how the offense as a whole is doing

if we are scoring less points, then we haven't replaced TO's presence

Not really, based on the three year average, we have 4 less TDs this year which is less than a TD per game (6 or 1 per game from the high point of 2007). If you take into consideration that we were without our #1 WR for 1 game and our top two backs for a 1 1/2 games (who I believe make our passing game more dangerous) is partially to balme for our lower scoring JMO.

Doesnt matter statistically. Addition by subtraction.

Injuries were there last year with Kosier and that hurt the team far more than losing Roy for a game or 2 does. And Roy is the #1 only in title.

The running game this year is light years ahead of 07, even with injuries.

It all washes out making 4 points/game significant enough IMO.

JG can move the ball. Ill give him some credit. But its funny how the 'best TE' in football can't get the rock in the redzone or how Marty B cant get some redzone looks. So much for beans and rice.

You do realize teams are taking the TE (Witten) out of the game and forcing us to beat them with the WRs and running game. And it's not too hard to take the running game out with the TE. Atlanta did a good job. Too bad for them Romo was on fire and Austin killed them.

to go a little further, BTB commented on Austin helping Romo regain his powers:

And that T.O. fellow? He lost it, sometime in the fourth quarter of the week two Eagles game. He destroyed Philly's secondary that night but topped 80 yards in just three of his last fourteen games. His YPA dropped to 7.5, which put him in the bottom third of receivers who saw lots of passes.
Romo lost the elite receiving complement to Jason Witten, and his purple mojo flowed away. For the last two weeks, however, Miles Austin has played like Lance Alworth, a pantheon-level number 19. Austin's 16 catches and 421 yards look impressive. In YPA terms, they're just as good.
2009 to date
  • Austin - 35 attempts, 21,completions, 502 yards, 14.3 YPA
  • Wiliams - 30 attempts, 12 completions, 230 yards, 7.7 YPA

...and looking at Owens performance the past three years apart from Romo's number, we start to get why Jones figured it was time to part ways with the wayward receiver, considering the circumstances...he just was'nt worth the trouble anymore...

...................................................VOA..........yds....Eyds..td...............rank
T.Owens DAL 274 7 284 8 10.2% 23 ..11.0% 152 1180 1,380 13 56% 2006 [7]

T.Owens DAL 448 3 435 3 28.2% 5 ....27.0% 141 1355 1,554 15 57% 2007 [3]

T.Owens DAL 75 46 57 52 -5.7% 56 ..-7.4% 139 1052 ...991 10 50% 2008 [46]

where VOA is value over an average receiver, we can see Owens goes from 7th in 2006, to 3rd in 2007 and then off the cliff to 46th in 2008, his least productive year with the Cowboys...the drop-off is pretty steep...

Good stuff. Thanks for the post. Just confirms what the eye is seeing but that's good.

Did TO score 14 touchdowns last year? Seems he dropped at least five touchdown passes.

We will have replaced TO's production when Austin puts up 1000+ yards and 10 + TD's for the season as well as draws double coverage consistantly and frees up the other guys to make plays.

It appears that the stats are slightly better than after 6 games. This was to be expected since Romo didn't play in the 7th game in 2008. 2007 was an outstanding year for ROMO so it would be understandable if he didn't match those stats. Interesting enough this year , he has 4 less TD's and 5 less INT. the big outlier is the completion % which is off 8% from the 2007 year. Considering the number of drops that TO had, it appears that the driver is most likely less accuracy this year.

Against the three year average, Romo is having a statisically similiar year to his overall average.

I have never been concerned about replacing TO production. Right now we have more guys involved in the offense than before and none of this I need the ball it we are going to win BS. Enough of TO let the Bills deal with him.

Those numbers appear to be off.

NFL.com says we've had 436 plays 2878 yards, which is a 6.6 average yards per play.

Really?

We are 5-2

In 2006 we were 4-3

In 2007 we were 6-1

In 2008 we were 4-3

Owens has been replaced.

That was an old comment. If you look at the TDs through seven weeks, we've have the same as our average from 2006-2008.

You're correct. And I think what really matters is the end result. I think by the way this team is playing, as a team, that we've surpassed TO's production, or lack thereof.

To told a reporter all he has to do is out perform Roy Williams this year to be successful, well Roy Williams has scored two touchdowns.

TO has only caught one and had a reverse against hte Texans for another.

So it seems by TO's standards that Roy is his equal.

you didn't add the additional weeks for 06-08 when you updated 2009.

5-6 tds is a lot. that's 7pts/game, that's huge.

it's clear this offense isn't nearly as explosive when TO was good. that offense was tops in the league, which this offense no longer is.

you guys are sounding like rafael vela, when he goes into homer mode.

there's a reason why TO TD's production was considered special. only randy moss was as prolific a scorer.

there's advantages to being more methodical in scoring, this offense still has room to grow with romo to roy, and TO was done. but don't try to compare this offense as being just as explosive when 2007 was a magical year.

I went back and checked the data. There was in fact an error on the combined results. I have corrected them below.
