What the hell is it all about? I bought a samsun HD DVD player, then bought the HD DVD version of Transformers, but I can't get it to play.

Now, a few things I do know or think I know.

I think you have to use a DMI connection for HD DVD (1080p) right?

I don't have a 1080P televsion (I have an HDTV 1080i), so I know I can't watch the HD DVD transformers movie on my tv, but I put it in anyway just to make sure I had sound. The HD DVD player itself SHOULD play the movie, it's just the TV shouldn't be able to recieve the signal. And it doesn't. But the HD DVD player doesn't know that my TV can't recieve the signal so it should play it regardless, right?

I'm getting nothing. I set the DVD player to 1080P (obviously I couldn't see anything) and let it play for awhile. No sound whatsoever. So I switched the video format to component just so I can see and it says "Cannot play this DVD" or something like that.

What's the problem? My DVD players says it supports 1080p, the HD DVD is 1080p, so it should play, right?

Can anyone help me out here?

For HD-DVD and BluRay, you will have to go over HDMI to get HD video. If you use the component, the players will down convert to 576p. It is all because of the silly HDCP.

I did not know that.

That sucks. I also just found out the DVD player I bought does not play HD DVD. It's "Up converts" regular dvds to "HD quality". Samsung does bluray, not HDDVD.

Looks like I have to go buy a toshiba.

Thanks, Dallas.

I'm hoping Blu-Ray wins out. Their potential capacity in future discs far exceed that of HD-DVD.

They will win, go to bestbuy they are pushing blu ray hard. I went to get an hd tv, and the clerk said they had an expo and they decided to go wtih bluray. Blockbuster is going to bluray, go to your local store you can already rent them. Target is going to bluray. With the help of the ps3 its pretty much all but over.

I hope you're right. The thought of future 200 GB single discs where I can fit an entire Cowboys game in HD quality along with the pregame, postgame, cowboys huddle, cowboys gameday, special edition, babe's "the score", inside the NFL clips, etc, has me really excited.

Like any movie is going to require 25 gigs of space, its meaningless.

The 'format war' is nothing more than a way to best screw the consumer.

Yes, competition in technology typically ends up screwing the customer.

;)

HD-DVD will win the war because when people ask what Blu-Ray is, the answer is always HD-DVD.

Please, the competition in technology has nothing to do with the fact that most people upgraded to DVD fairly recently and dont want to pay even more to watch films they already own.

Uh, they ALREADY do. They couldn't put lossless audio on the Transformers HD-DVD because they ran out of space (30 GB). The sound is still amazing, but they can run out of space. And the disc doesn't have special features on it, there is a 2nd disc for those. These are HD, they take up a lot more space than movies in standard definition.

Lots of Blu-Ray Movies are on 50GB discs. And there are more things than movies that these discs will be used for. You have to think about the computer industry and what they're going to want, and obviously they're going to want as much storage space as possible.

And the format war is not all but over. It was, and Blu-Ray was running away with it, but that was until Paramount/Dreamworks went HD-DVD exclusive and evened the field by quite a bit. I know Blockbuster went Blu-Ray, though online and some stores carry HD-DVD. Target was supposed to, but they're still stocking new HD-DVDs as well. Best-Buy supports both pretty much the same. This holiday will determine a lot and Blu-Ray will still probably win (if there is a winner), but it will be awhile.

There are rumors of sub $200 players out this holiday, but nothing concrete. You might be able to find one on clearance since Toshiba is releasing new models and a lot of stores are getting rid of the old ones to make room for them.

Of course if you have an Xbox 360 there's the add-on drive for $180 (less at some places).

I didn't know that about the 360. I'm gonna have to look into that.

Thanks. :D

Sounds like laziness if anything.... You cant fit it in 25 gigs? Are you serious? Its a 90 minute movie....

Actually it's 143 minutes, but you were close.

Normal DVDs have about 9 gigs. HD is much better quality, obviously it's going to take a lot more space. That's why DVR's get like 300 HRs of standard TV and only 30 of HD. Huge difference. And the HD you're getting on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is of a higher quality than what you're getting on TV.

I'm sure they could have easily made it all fit on the disc, but it would have suffered in the quality department.

And of course there are other things that take up space. There is commentary, some web enabled features, and other viewing and language options as well.
