There are rumors of sub $200 players out this holiday, but nothing concrete. You might be able to find one on clearance since Toshiba is releasing new models and a lot of stores are getting rid of the old ones to make room for them.

Of course if you have an Xbox 360 there's the add-on drive for $180 (less at some places).

Keep an eye open for "Black Friday" sales ads starting to show up pretty soon. Google Black Friday to get some good sites to watch. Good luck!

Actually it's 143 minutes, but you were close.

Normal DVDs have about 9 gigs. HD is much better quality, obviously it's going to take a lot more space. That's why DVR's get like 300 HRs of standard TV and only 30 of HD. Huge difference. And the HD you're getting on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is of a higher quality than what you're getting on TV.

I'm sure they could have easily made it all fit on the disc, but it would have suffered in the quality department.

And of course there are other things that take up space. There is commentary, some web enabled features, and other viewing and language options as well.

You can download HD movies from the Xbox Live Marketplace and they all weigh in around 5 or 6 gigs.

Please, the competition in technology has nothing to do with the fact that most people upgraded to DVD fairly recently and dont want to pay even more to watch films they already own.
Fairly recently?

And what does people upgrading "fairly recently" to DVD have to do with competition in new technologies (i.e., the "format war")?

Are you trying to say that HD-DVD is only a tool to sap consumers by an unneeded upgrade? If so, I take it you've never seen an HDTV.

I'd wait on that, Toshiba is rumored to be working with MSFT to release (another) xbox sku with the hd-dvd built in

No not at all.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are just two different technologies taht enable you to watch movies in 1080p format. The TV just has to be able to support 1080P and you'll be able to view either blu ray or HDDVD on it, so long as your DVD player supports that format.

It effects your DVD player, not your TV. You can't watch HDDVD movies on a bluray DVD player, and you can't watch bluray movies on an HDDVD player.

With today's technology can't they make a DVD player that can play Bluray and HDDVD?

There are combo players out there that play both- but they are expensive.

They have pretty much the same deals for HD-DVD players (including the 360 add-on).

The TV doesn't have to support 1080p. 720p and 1080i are fine as well. As far as I am aware, no movies to date have implemented the feature that prevents movies from being played in HD via component. 1080p can only be done with HDMI/DVI/VGA (xbox 360), but 1080i and 720p should work with component.

Ok, I got it now.

So then I can buy an HDDVD or BluRay right now and watch it on my HDTV (1080i max)?

Yep, I watched HD-DVDs in 1080i with my 360 until I got a VGA cable so it's now 1080p. And I know the PS3 does 1080i via component as well.

As far as Blu-Ray players go, there is a $400 40GB PS3 coming out I believe Nov. 2 with a copy of Spider-Man 3 on Blu-Ray packaged with it. The downside of the new version is it doesn't have backward's compatibility with PS2 games, less USB ports, and no memory card readers (not really used that often anyway).

Well, that'd be for people that don't already have a Xbox 360. I certainly wouldn't buy it all over again just so it was built in. And if the RUMOR is true, they say it wouldn't be out until late next year anyway.

true but look at how quick the elite/hdmi enabled/larger hdd rumors came to truth...it is msft after all ;)

For those of you interested in a really cheap HD-DVD player it seems like Toshiba is clearing out their older models this weekend and their HD-A2 model should be available at either Wal-Mart or Best Buy for only $99. This model doesn't support 1080p, only up to 1080i, but for those who don't have 1080p TVs and are looking for something cheap this is it.

The main problem is that it is still unknown if HD DVD or Blu Ray will be the winner in the remake of the VHS-Beta battles of the 1980s.

I know LG has a player that will play both but it costs your left arm, left leg and left testicle.
