Heard a tidbit about Holland on GaC today

Apparently per Calvin Watkins Holland will be the starter upon his return and it is Houck's decision. Anybody else hear this? I almost wrecked my truck when I heard them say this!

When healthy, Holland is a road grader. He also has a pretty amazing anchor.

The problem is that he hasn't ever been able to stay on the field. If he can stay on the field we'll be a-ok on the offensive line this year.

I think we'll be okay between Arkin and Nagy anyway. I'd look for the line to soon be Free-Arkin-Costa-Nagy-Smith in the future...I think Gurode might be playing his last season here, and we'll see how long until Kosier retires.

No use wrecking your truck. That's been the plan since Dallas cut Davis.

Need to have Nagy or Arkin or both ready to go, though, because there's no evidence that Holland can stay healthy because of his issues with weight.

It wouldn't bother me at all if one of the two beat out Holland for the starting job, but again, Holland has played well when he's been in the starting lineup.

I can tell that is not accurate. There is no way it is Houck's decision and that makes the entire news item suspect in my opinion. There is just no way Garrett is going to allow a position coach to overrule him and who he wants to start. It may come to pass that Holland gets the job back but I guarantee everyone that that will be what Garrett wants. If Garrett wants someone else, that someone else will be starting.

I understand fans knee jerking, because Holland came in fat. But when he was on the field, he was good. Film doesn't lie. You just don't cut a guy just because he was or is fat, if he can play well.

Now he continues to battle injuries due to being out of shape, then he will be cut. Or if Nagy or Arkin etc. prove to be up to task, then Holland will be cut. Simple as that. So far, it hasn't been proven, they will be upto task, Holland has already proven that, when he was able to play.

I agree, as Jerry has said a few times that there won't be a coach or player on the team that Garrett doesn't want there. Thus, the same should be assumed about the starters. I will say though, that Garrett seems like he'll value the opinions of his coaches prior to making some decisions.

I also won't be surprised if Holland starts upon his return. Thing is, he can't stay healthy ... so it's good to see the young guys getting first team reps, as they'll likely be needed. Not to mention, Kosier has also had injury issues, and Gurode is aging and just recently returned from an injury/scope.

I've always been about "letting the best players play" even though our beloved team hasn't always adopted that method. But, how does an NFL player with nothing else to do come in fat and out of shape in this day in age, along with the chance to be the starting guard?

I hope Watkins is wrong, and I don't even care if he is better then Nagy or Arkin. I want commited players on this team that want to play this game that most of us would give our souls away to play this game.

IMO send a message, and the moment he is healthy cut the slob. 500k is nothing to make a point.

There's no evidence that Garrett desires to overrule Houck on this. If Houck tells Garrett Holland should start, then why should Garrett not trust his offensive line coach who works with those players exclusively? If he doesn't trust him, he should get rid of him.

It's not a matter of overruling him. As Garrett's good buddy Laufenberg said, Houck is "Garrett's best friend in coaching". So of course Garrett is going to value Houck's opinion greatly on things.

Holland is just the latest in a line of players who struggle with controlling their weight. Some of them had good NFL careers despite those problems.

Let's remember, this is Watkins reporting this. This is the samer reporter who claimed in '08 that the team plane was constantly late for players being late and Jerry being late, which was proven not to be true and to find out that....PLANES GET DELAYED FROM TIME TO TIME.

Another goof that claimed he had 'anonymous sources' and the story was completely and utterly false.

Meaning....he really didn't have stories and made the story up.

He got caught red handed.

And yet, we are supposed to believe a proven liar?

And Holland is another example of a guy who's inability to control himself has cost him chance after chance at having a successful NFL career.
