Heard a tidbit about Holland on GaC today

Holland plays well when he is healthy? When was this exactly? I saw him play one good half against Pittsburgh, then shockingly he came out of the game injured. Other than that I have no fond memories of his good play. Lets cut his sorry rear end and be done with it.

I'm not saying it's right. I just don't think it's big bad Jerry telling the coaches who to start.

For whatever reason we've seemed reluctant to play rookies. So I'm not shocked that they would go with Holland when he's healthy. We usually need to be forced into going younger and then finding out it was for the best all along.

When does this happen?

In 2008 when he had that one good game against Pittsburgh? Nope, couldn't finish that one game.

Was it last year when the team tried to turn to him to replace a benched Leonard Davis? Nope, he lasted but a few plays before coming up lame once again.

And this year? When the team was counting on him to be a starter for them? He barely lasted a week in training camp!

Face it, there is no such thing as a 'healthy' Montrae Holland. Nor is there one that can in any way be counted on.

It's time for this team to move on while they can.

Despite being a starter in Denver until his struggles with weight issues got him cut?

He has been a reserve or inactive for far fewer games than he has started.

So please, stop with the act that he is some quality starter that has earned the benefit of the doubt due to his consistent track record.

But what if he just happens to be the best option? It's not like this team is loaded with offensive linemen. Holland may be the best for now.

I want to play the best five week 1. I don't care who they are or how they got there.

This is just Houck in love with the idea of Holland, not the reality. When in shape, healthy and motivated, he can play. But that is not his state now and rarely over the course of his career.

Really, it is quite amazing to me that this player is held in this kind of esteem being that he cannot stay healthy and even has been a gameday scratch on numerous occasions when he actually could play.

Even among the fanbase, it is mind-boggling. There were people who wanted to jettison Kosier and install this player years ago.

How can he best the best five when he hasn't been in shape and has developed no chemistry with the other four players? He has not played left guard in several years and never with Free.

And here is the simple deal. Make him EARN his job. Don't just install him as the starter against Minnesota like nothing happened.

I would make this player earn the right to start over other players who actually did show up in shape and have been working hard.

Where did I say he has a consistent track record or that he's earned the benefit of the doubt?

You said he has always been a reserve, and that wasn't the case. He started a season for Denver, and by all accounts did a good job.

The Cowboys also apparently feel he has done a solid job for them when healthy, and believe he is a better option as a starter right now than the rookies or Costa.

I doubt his health, because of his weight issues, and don't think he will last long as a starter, but I'm not going to put down his ability as a starter, which the guys coaching him feel he has, simply because some on this board are outraged that he is "fat and lazy."

Then it's a clear indictment of the people in charge. Holland has had his 'three strikes' and he whould be 'out' of here.

So do I, but what about Holland's track record makes anyone think that should be him?

And after Week One, his salary becomes guaranteed.

I'll admit that up until this recent episode, I was in Holland's corner as I thought he did play well - when he played.

But lasting just one week of training camp before missing the next several with a back issue?

If that doesn't make it clear enough for people I don't know what will.

See? I'm sorry, but this is the idiot stuff that goes around to disprove Holland's ability.

The coaches said the reason he was a game-day scratch when Cory Proctor was here is because Holland could only play the guard positions. With seven linemen active, someone had to be able to play center, too.

The coaches essentially admitted last offseason they should have taken Holland as a reserve anyway because he was the better player, and they did it throughout 2010.

I don't like that Holland doesn't have the self-discipline to control his weight, but there's no reason to falsely disparage his ability.

The dress rehearsal is this week. Where is Montrae Holland? He has done nothing to deserve the starting LG job while Bill Nagy is getting it done right now. Nagy's athletic ability and 24 year old legs should start at LG, imso. Nagy fits how Garrett wants to play. Nagy is a whole lot better than even Dallas thought. Is Montrae Holland really going to get to the second level and get out on screens and run and block in space?

I'll believe Montrae Holland starting at LG when I see it in New York. If he does happen to start for some very odd reason, he probably will not last very long based on his history in Dallas alone. The guy couldn't beat out Cory Proctor for crying out loud. Holland is simply unreliable and not athletic. Denver booted him for the very reason why he isn't even on the field right now.

Would Garrett really want to send this message to his team?

I don't think so.

So, if Bill Nagy goes out and plays three more good quarters, Garrett is just going to reward Holland for doing nothing.

We'll see. There is no way Montrae Holland is in the top 5 offensive linemen on this team.

By the way, Jerry Jones didn't sound too happy with Holland showing up way out of shape, either.

Perhaps they feel he earned his job last season, since they were willing to cut Davis and install him as the starter.

Again, I have no problem with this if they believe he's clearly the best man for the job. In a way, his being injured has been a blessing because we've gotten to see the younger players with the starting lineup. That way we know that if Holland fails, we do have some options.

The same type of thinking that kept Leonard Davis and Colombo around? Great. I thought that foolishness left when they did.

I think it's great that Jerry and Co have folks like you.

They can do no wrong.

While I was very much pleased with Nagy's play, I don't think anyone should say he should start yet.

It will be interesting to see him (if we do) against the Vikings starters, since he will be lined up against Kevin Williams. Pass that test, then we can anoint him.

By just suiting up, he would 'pass a test' that Montrae Holland can't.

He started the Seattle game in 08 at LG, solidifying the Oline and giving Romo more time than he'd had all season long. He played the 1st half of the Pitt game until he got rolled up on and hurt his ankle.

Along side Free, he started the Commanders game last year and played well. He also filled in for Kosier in the 2nd half of the Minnesota game and continued his solid play into the Giants game the next week before he got hurt. Plus he has more time playing next to Free than any of the other guys having played all through training camp and practice to the right of Free in the 09 season before Free became a starter.

You reek of an uninformed, opinionated loud mouth. If you're gonna stand on a podium and yell emphatically then at least have an idea of what you're talking about.

You must have made a mistake in your previous post but if what you were trying to say (after being called out for being wrong) is that he's been a reserve more than he's started then you'll be wrong again. He's started 59 out of 80 games he's been in.

How can he not be better than a rooke 4th rounder from D2, a 7th rounder and an UFA from a year before? Are you even listening to yourself? Even though he came into camp overweight, from all indications during the 1st week of practice he was playing well and doing what he's done since he's been here.

If they start him then it's because he's better than whatever else we have or what we know is out there (Waters, Davis etc) and for no other reason.

It's never good to come in overweight, but why are people acting like he's just slacking while these other guys work? Maybe he's legitimately hurt just like anyone else?

Like gimme said, you play the best player. You don't play some inferior player and cost the entire team and maybe your QB's health just because you get mad at a guy.

Gawd, fans are so quick to call for people's heads. It's like they enjoy that more than the game sometimes.

Davis and Colombo played poorly last season. There's no indication that Holland has. Again, if Dallas believes he's the best option, then the Cowboys should have him as the starter. Simple as that.

I guess this is what you resort to when people disagree with you?

Never have I agreed with every move Dallas has made. I'm not even saying this will turn out to be the right move.

I think it's great this forum has folks like you around to be a jerk when someone doesn't support your opinion.
