Heard praise on Escobar

I've now heard three separate local people on the radio raving about how good Gavin Escobar looks.

With Hanna now nursing that eerily phrased "bone bruise", it could be even more important that Escobar show up this season. Anthony Spencer had a "bone bruise", and it turned into a microfracture that basically ended his career.

Let's hope Escobar finally turns into the 2nd-round pick we hoped for. He's actually been pretty good at times, but they just don't use him much.

To be honest the Hanna injury doesn't effect Escobar much. Hanna is a blocking tight end, and Escobar never showed enough improvement to fill that role. He's still gonna get his share of snaps, just don't think much will be added with Hanna hurt. As much criticism he got from the preseason game, Swaim is the one who will gain the most snaps.

This is Escobars contract season. Looks like another poor 2nd rd pick this era.

And that doesn't diminish his talent level just a poor pick for 2nd rd in 2013 with so many other pressings needs.

Probably become our 3rd TE this era we've developed who could start elsewhere.

Unless Witten is planning on retiring ,we're releasing or trading him and we've intentionally not used Escobar so we could sign for much less to replace Witten?

Has to be one of the weirdest high picks we've made this era. Hasn't made any sense whatsoever yet because of the way we haven't used him .

Most will agree with that. Being a contract year, he might suddenly become more of a featured player finally.

Think he will play a lot more now.

I like him and he needs to be used like the other pass catching big TEs around the league.

Forget his blocking..we have 4 All Pro OL on the line..

let them block.

Throw him the ball..

design some plays for him like they do for Witten.

Money is on the line for him regardless. I expect enough production that some team (probably the Giants) makes him happy in the offseason.

Escobar is a good player, but the Cowboys don't use him. That's why the draft pick was so peculiar.

Escobar got caught in a bad situation. Everyone around the league saw Gronk and Hernandez dominate with the two tight end action, and the NFL is a copycat league. Problem is the very next year Dallas hires Linehan who just doesn't run that kind of offense, he prefers a slot receiver. If Escobar ever could have developed as a run blocker then I think he could have played a lot more in Dallas, but that's just not him.

So, where do we go moving forward with Escobar? Do we resign him to an extended contract?
Thoughts ...

Depends. If they feel Prescott is the answer to post-Romo, a tight end could be targetted high in the draft next year.

Hard to assess him when the ball isn't coming his way often. We have under utilized him in the red zone since he has been here.

Good to hear some good stuff about Escobar. We will need him to step up this year. Witten is Witten, but we still need someone behind him. Hopefully Escobar gets more plays this year. Especially now that Hanna may be out a while longer.

I bet this is Witten's last year...and he takes over for him next year. Just a hunch.

Hanna's injury could be what Escobar needs to get his chance. Everyone says he looks smoother and faster than before the injury but haven't heard anything about him in practice reports, videos, etc.

The thing with him is that even when he is in, he doesn't get the ball thrown his way very much, and that is peculiar because we all know Romo will spread it around as much as anyone...if you are open he will throw it to you.

Unfortunately I don't think the injury will give him many more snaps. Dallas values their second tight end as a blocker, they rarely get thrown to. That's why Escobar has never got many snaps so far. We know Witten is going to play every game, every snap so he can't be the receiving tight end either. I think Escobar's best bet to a larger role is if Beasley gets hurt. Dallas' only backup slot receiver is Lucky Whitehead, and he's still really raw as a receiver. Escobar presents interesting matchups in the slot.

Escobar can't take over for Witten. They're two totally different players.

Escobar is supposed to play similarly to Jimmy Graham out in space. Witten is a blocking tight end that can catch. Swaim is a poor man's Witten.

And I don't think this is Witten's last year, unless they haul off and win a Super Bowl. And even then, I think he comes back.

peculiar or dumb?? could have been a defensive player that we would have used.
it was dumb because with witten here, you should not draft another TE except maybe in 5th round or lower.
