Most will agree with that. Being a contract year, he might suddenly become more of a featured player finally.

Just in time to cost us to keep. Frustrating. :banghead:

But it is nice to hear about his get recovery and the aforementioned improvement.

I've now heard three separate local people on the radio raving about how good Gavin Escobar looks.

With Hanna now nursing that eerily phrased "bone bruise", it could be even more important that Escobar show up this season. Anthony Spencer had a "bone bruise", and it turned into a microfracture that basically ended his career.

Let's hope Escobar finally turns into the 2nd-round pick we hoped for. He's actually been pretty good at times, but they just don't use him much.

Honestly, because they don't use him they should seriously consider seeing what they can get for him now. As long as Witten is on this team, he will be misused. And to be honest, with the amount of weapons the Cowboys have, he's a luxury we can afford to do without. If they could turn him into a pass rusher, Safety, or linebacker I would be ecstatic.

peculiar or dumb?? could have been a defensive player that we would have used.
it was dumb because with witten here, you should not draft another TE except maybe in 5th round or lower.

Some bust defensive players after him.....

But Tyrann Matthieu was there.

Should have been Le'Veon Bell. Then we wouldn't have drafted the Underwear Bandit and would have had a compliment/replacement for Murray. And we wouldn't t have had to use the #4 overall pick on another running back.

Snowball effect.

Escobar is a complete bust, I don't care how great he looks in practice, wake me when he actually does something in a game.

I bet this is Witten's last year...and he takes over for him next year. Just a hunch.
Thats agreed.

Thats why Escobar needs to hopefully progress with Hanna out.

Witten does not have the flexibility Escobar has to split him out wide if desired.

Also in the slot in the Redzone.

This should be Escobar's year. He has spent the whole off-season in the gym rehabbing.

He must have done some strength work for blocking.

Don't care.

I've heard about how great Marty B and Escobar both have looked in TC in the past.

Prove it on Sundays in the fall and not in July and August.

I think Escobar would have been used more to this point had the Cowboys not had better options.

He's a receiving-type tight end, so he's not keeping Witten off the field. He's not a good enough blocker to keep James Hanna (or now Geoff Swaim) off the field.

The Cowboys could use him in the slot or flex him out wide to create mismatches; but is he keeping Cole Beasley off the field? No way.

A wasted second round pick. But if he ends up somewhere a Hall of Famer isn't ahead of him, he can be a good player...... in 2017.

So, where do we go moving forward with Escobar? Do we resign him to an extended contract?
Thoughts ...

I'd showcase him in preseason, pump up his numbers, then trade him. No way they show him the money next season so let's get something for him before losing him for nothing.

The dude has caught an incredibly high percentage of touchdowns per catch.

I don't think so, Floaty. I think he stays as long as Romo. I might be wrong but I don't think Witten is going anywhere soon.

I thought the same thing and was just too lazy to type it. He's not going anywhere until the 2018 season at the earliest, and probably 2019 since that's the year Tony's dead cap cost becomes manageable. Plus, it's not like he's going to get any slower between now and then.

Escobar needs to improve his drive strength but he had improved his upper body strength to the point where he can be a wall off blocker last year. He is a better inline guy because his length makes it harder to get low on the move. I'm interested to see how he does.

Nothing more than a red zone target. That can be very valuable if used properly. But without being able to block at a higher level then that's all he will be. I hope I am wrong but I don't see much more production from him then what we have got in the past.

Trade him for what? A bag of balls, I wouldn't give up a 6th round pick for the guy.

His competition is Beasley. And Beasley is a bigger mismatch. Escobar just isn't Jimmy Graham.

Respectfully, but completely disagree. I don't see a guy who loves the entire process of football like Witten does walking away anytime soon.

Only way I see Witten walking away is with a superbowl ring or crutches. That said, he most likely hangs em up when Romo does.
