I thought The Dark Knight was pro-interventionist - I think it made a variety of subtle arguments about morality, anti-heroes, and the necessity of intervening against "evil", or atleast the "evil" that the Joker represented as being against the society or peace.
I thought there were many allusions between the criminal underground and the Joker's character to terrorism and terrorist leaders.
One could even argue that it made the movie a pro-war argument, since it was produced and released at a time when we are in two wars and the arguments about the moral and legal justification for the wars are high in our collective consciousness.
I thought the whole theme of being a "hero" long enough to be "hated" was an allusion to US intervention in foreign policy - Or the whole angle of Batman's butler telling the story about the Jewel thief and how they had to burn down the forest (alluding to collateral damage in warfare) to get the guy.
The whole lesson seemed to be that inorder to effectively combat what we see as evil, we have to take on aspects of that evil - The scene where Batman's character loses control and beats up the Joker in the interrogation room is an example of that playing out on the screen.
This movie is just dripping in this symbolic stuff. Oozing with it...
