Sorry Hos, I can't buy bulking up Spencer to play DE. This guy right off the bat is their second best outside rusher and Wade even mentioned that he had real good size like Merriman and didn't want to get him much bigger because it would slow him down.

I agree that Carp is very good shooting gaps from the inside. He should get a lot of sacks from that position.
Not saying he will, but that he could if they decide to keep Carpenter at SOLB.

the spencer pick erases the burnett and carpenter misses.

Carpenter a miss? That is why the Spencer pick irritated me. Many will infer that it means Carp is a bust and I just don't see that as true.

he might not be a bust yet, but we are bringing in more people to cut into his playing time so he better produce from the get go. he was playing very good towards the end of the season, but the defense just wasn't the same after ellis went out. and spending a 1st rounder on a backup ILB is a miss in my opinion.

Carpenter and Spencer are not the same type of players and will not compete against each other .....

Bill, Jerry, and Now Wade, are building an elite unit of young strong fast Linebackers .....

Ware - Carpenter - ? - Spencer

dont be suprised if we do not pick another one up next year.

I am very excited.

Are the rolling eyes because you disagree with the idea that Carp is a bust, or my opinion that he isn't?

I agree with your opinion that he isn't. You give a pick a good three years or so before you start labeling. (unless his last name is Leaf) :p:

lol. that was funny. (in a good way, dont go joe pesci on me). ok he's not a bust yet. he may or may not turn out to be a good player. i thought he played well at the end of the year and was not so good at ILB. so again now we have yet another pass rusher type in the first round. it's the never ending search for the pass rusher that irritates me. nothing against carp. like i said, he seemed to come around at the end at OLB. but to draft year in and year out a pass rusher has got to stop. let's see:

1994- shante carver
1996 - kavika pittman
1998 - greg ellis
1999 - ebenezer ekuban
we can grade that run a failure with only ellis panning out.

and now we have:
2005 - demarcus ware
2006 -bobby carpenter
2007 - anthony spencer

it seems that every year we draft one and for some reason we suck at it.
and yet other teams find jason taylors and adalious thomas in the lower rounds. and please don't take this as whining. is just commentary.

I hear ya, but remember what I said, if Spencer puts on 20 pounds of muscle (the right way) he might be used as the RDE. In my mind that would move Carpenter back to SOLB. They're not saying he can't get pressure. They're saying they believe he can apply it right up the middle. Not many players can do that. I believe Parcells saw that, but then asked him to read and react. Not in this scheme. He will be asked to attack at the point and to come on blitzes up the middle.

Think about this in 2 years.

Hatcher...Spears...Spencer
Carpenter...Burnett...James or Ayodele...Ware

We could still have Canty and Ratliff for depth and Roy on blitzes.

Translation...QBs pay your insurance. The thought of Ware and Spencer both coming from the right side is an Offensive Coordinator's worst nightmare.

Wade Phillips already said Spencer is at the weight he wants him so why would they add 20 pounds to move to RE?

The whole purpose of drafting Spencer was to get pressure opposite of D-Ware...

Look at the first post and the word "could" and that post and the word "might."

It's called looking ahead, not making a prediction.

I'll take a stab at it. Wade Phillips' version of the 3-4 relies on a bookend approach to attacking the ball. In San Diego he had Merriman and Shaun Phillips. Too many people fail to realize just how important Shaun was to that scheme's success.

Greg Ellis' tenure here is on thin ice. He's past his prime and coming off a season ending injury. His contributions in 2007 are probably limited to situational pass rushing form the LDE spot.

Carpenter most reminds me of Tedy Bruschi who was a college DE who has turned into an NFL ILB. When did he have his best success last year? When he had a given assignment such as shadowing Vick. From ILB he is our best chance to go get the ball. He can also spell Ware or Spencer at OLB.

If Spencer puts on about 20 pounds of muscle the right way he could even be used as the RDE and be lined up on the same side as Ware. This would almost certainly put Burnett or Carpenter at SOLB.

The key to Phillips' 3-4 scheme is versatility and the ability to come after the QB from anywhere. To disguise things so much that it creates havoc. Last year we didn't do that. Not that we couldn't, we simply didn't.

Marcus Spears should make a huge leap forward in this scheme. I look for either him or Canty to take some NT reps and Hatcher to get more time as well.

This defense is deep and will not tire. QBs beware, the Dallas Cowboys will be arriving right in the middle of your chests.
Great post. Been screamin' this for months.

But for the 3-4 DE part, I just think that's very unlikely. He's trying to get and keep his weight down at this point.

I still see Carpenter as in an interior LB filling the wholes and given the shortest route to the QB. I haven't given up on him in the least just believe he played out of position for Bill. Ware and Spencer coming around the corner should be enjoyable. Canty is the one I think is most underrated and the biggest surprise this season IMO. Slow or rooted QBs or QBs on the move will be ducks this year.

I wish we had more depth at NT but I also wish we had someone else to pair with T-New. Me and every other team fan probably wish for that, oh well. We will have a better D this year with our draft additions. Maybe a better O although that may be due more to gained experience than acquisitions so far. Be very interesting season for the Boys and thei fans no doubt.
