Here’s the real reason behind the Dallas Cowboys’ mismatched uniform colors

In the past six years, we’ve seen eight NFL teams make changes to their uniforms. Teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers overhauled their looks with fresh outfittings from Nike – albeit, the Bucs’ came with much criticism. Others, like the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, made subtle and welcomed changes that fans were pleased about.

One team you haven’t seen change its look is the Dallas Cowboys, and you may never see it happen. The Cowboys have one of the most iconic uniforms in all of football: The white jerseys with royal blue stripes and numbers, and turquoise-gray pants. Strangely enough, they wear that combination at home. Dallas is the only team in the league to wear white on its home turf, which raises a lot of questions.

What made Dallas want to wear plain, white uniforms in front of the home crowd? Cowboys equipment director Mike McCord, who’s been with the team since 1989, shed light on that very notion by phone on Monday to explain the quirks of Dallas’ unique look.

“Originally, the white at home started with the heat, especially at Texas Stadium,” McCord told FOX Sports. “As hot as it could be for our late-August, early-September games, I think the heat was a big factor, and one of those things was making the other teams wear darker jerseys on the road, as well as standing in the sun on the sidelines in the old stadium was a huge factor in that. So any time you’re wearing darker colors, it tends to retain the heat. So that was a big part of why the Cowboys wore white jerseys at home.”

White at home started at the Cotton Bowl in the 60s, not Texas Stadium. There are plenty of videos and photos to support that. I was never in the Cotton Bowl - I'm not THAT old - but I was in Texas Stadium plenty and that partial roof was great for holding in the heat. I still miss the old barn, though.

I've actually grown to hate the "greenish" home pants. They don't look iconic to me, they just look out of place. Playing in a dome on HD TV they look like they don't belong with the uniform. I see nothing wrong with getting them back to gray, or even silver like the road pants.

I always thought the silver-gray pants of the 70s looked better than the blue-greenish pants.

These are still my favorite uniforms, although that game sucked.

Love our helmet but wouldn't mind a carbon fiber strip down the middle like seattle. Think it would look sick.

So, this thread is basically super old and/or conservative types want the ugly green pants to stay while younger, more forward-thinking people want the uniforms to be cohesive.

Cool. Got it.

Mismatched uniforms aren't "iconic like Yankees pinstripes". They are just mismatched. It's unacceptable for the most valuable franchise in America to dawn mismatched uniforms. I would honestly rather change the helmets to match than have both the pants and helmet stay the same. Though, of course, I would much prefer just switching the pants to the right color...

Ah, the arrogance and the ignorance of youth, they go hand in hand

lol, I'll rephrase, then. Conservatives vs. Progressives: The Thread.

Better? (And I'm 46. Not a 'youth' but closer to death than birth.)

The seafoam pants is pretty much our 90s glory year look. The time in which Jerry Jones sustained his most success. This is probably why the look hasn't changed.

The history card has to be thrown out on the pants, because prior to the mid 80s we were either wearing gray, or white pants. There really is no other acceptable reason to keep them now so it has to be an executive call on the pants by now.

Nothing wrong with building a new tradition however. Those pants have been in place for over 30 years. The white shirts are back to the 60s. The star has only changed one time. We definitely are in the ballpark of Yankees pinstripes, or Laker Gold when it comes to the Cowboys home uni. To me the iconic portion is not the pants, but the whites at home. The pants are just an added piece to the uni.

From what I understand...most, if not all of us, don't give two.....about wearing white or blue jerseys at home..we just want to get rid of the green pants

Article could have been a bit more precise on that...that's the main sticking point

Well if you go back to the 70's like some of us, the blue shirt jinx was very real, maybe not in some supernatural way but the number did bear out that their record was much less in the dark shirts (and not because they were road games because some road games they still wore white)

Its odd because in baseball, basketball and hockey it is pretty standard to wear white at home. Maybe in the 60's there were more football teams who wore white at home. The Jets did , the Dolphins, the Rams, the Falcons, the Bengals, probably many more. It seems this writer is missing this major fact that its more that other teams changed and the Cowboys were on tv so much and fans were so used to it that they never made a change.

The Yankees pinstripes are what's iconic. The Cowboys green pants aren't. The star? Yes. The White jersey? Yes. The pants absolutely aren't to me. Bottom line is basically just because it's been a tradition for a long time doesn't mean it needs to stay a tradition or is a good tradition imo.

I agree with you. The reason for the green tint was to make the pants pop more on older style TV sets on which you typically couldn't see the green. That reason is now obsolete. I think they should just use the silver away pants with the white home jerseys or just some out with grey pants.

the sea green pants need to go. nobody watches in black and white anymore.

When the pants debuted, there was already color TV. Black and white has nothing to do with it.

There is some sort of green in there bro, shows up on TV better. That may not be seafoam green but I wall call it seafoam blue
