Although we have little to go by yet with Mike so far..
McCarthy reminds me of when Jimster came with his UM staff.
Jerrah wants a repeat of that success no doubt.
We shall see.
Clearly what McCarthy wanted and received was control over the coaches with their loyalties to him.
Not to Jerrah.
That's an excellent start.
All the talk about a college HC just seemed like a huge waste of time and money as we would have to deal with a learning curve doing that.
McCarthy and these coaches already know the ups and downs of their positions. Most would like to go on for their own HC opportunities.
When McCarthy did not return to football after 2018 and took his time off..
these coaches were obviously told he would hire them again soon.
He did.
So here we are..
We stand an excellent chance of the assistant coaches having done similar introspective reviews of their schemes as McCarthy has done.
No doubt McCarthy quizzed them about how they would go about coaching under him, what did they learn, what would they change or why stay the same, etc.
Garrett never did that in hiring his coaches and never had final approval..Jerrah did.
So as much as we belittle Garrett, this was the only way he could coach in Dallas.
Not true for McCarthy.
McCarthy could have picked any of 6-7 teams in the NFL.
The fact he came here knowing our history is gratifying.
Somethings could go wrong for us still to come.
But I like Mike. They say teams take on their coaches identity.
We shall see exactly what that is soon.

- Thank you for opening this kind of discussion (a refreshing breakaway from all the constant Dak threads)
- My optimistic is for the same reason why I believe the Cowboys were totally sold on McCarthy and immediate, no question hire. .. established veteran HC with Superbowl resume
and very creditable credentials.
Just makes much more sense than imaginary Urban Meyers or Lincoln Riley college HC hiring.
- Forget the Jimmie Johnson college HC to NFL HC experiments, and let’s stay to hitting the ground running, with the more established vet HC who has the much better resume/credentials.
We are in a “ Win- Now “ mode and there’s even less time for a college HC learning curve and adjustment period.
- Also McCarthy is a established offensive mind. That maintain a part of keeping a development with Dak, And MM has been innovative than vs what we’ve seen in Garrett.
Such as creative switching Montgomery from WR to RB, ..expanding/developing Randall Cobb’s game from “wingback” like to more conventional slot/WR.
* I expect MM to have much better game management skills, .. make much better in game adjustments, be a more complete overseer to his entire team as compared to Garrett,
* be a leader of men,- and not having players trying to overcome him or his staff, be a motivator and disciplinarian.
* knowing when to delegate duties and responsibilities to his assistants, and when to take charge of certain situations and issues when they arise.
One of those will play a part in Kellen Moore input/development. This still needs to be HIS lead with offense, with suggested blend of what Kellen himself can offer as a variation, new twists/looks.
* Here’s another big key that MM has to be able to make bigger impact - and that’s the revamp of the zeke run game and better utilization of the RBs, both in run and pass game.
Kellen was so simplistic and bland with RB use, imo.
Pollard was vastly underused as a receiver (only vs Detroit as a slot for TD) and all we did was run up the middle, and far too few splash runs. MM ‘s way has to make a bigger impact.
* Much of this new staff has been overhauled, and management has clearly given MM a green light to change up his preference of coaches and trainers, and I did not expect that much
free reign. That's how much the Jones have heavily invested in McCarthy now. That's saying quite a lot to me.
* the Mike Nolan Defense sustaining the 4-3 scheme, instead of the much talked about 3-4 scheme was huge, that also avoids another crucial learning curve and prevents players
uncomfortably having to adjust to 3-4 OLBs, 3-4 mike men, etc.
Maybe we’ll see a situational change up as we did with Matt Elberflus ‘occasional 3-4 look back in 2016. But I’m confident and comfortable it’s base will 4-3.
yes, of course we’re gonna here all the hype- hoopla of more turnovers, swarming approach, non-stop motor, change up looks, disguised coverages, physical , etc, etc. etc.
But we need to see what this new DC finally puts this to motion, as we’ve heard from the Rob Ryan, Monte Kiffin, Rod Marinelli, Kris Richard, same ole same ole
- and now its Nolan’s turn. And if McCarthy has had a clear stand out weakness, it’s been his defensive units.
His Packers defenses have always been manhandled for most part and playoffs no different.
