Lin Carter and a few others have written Conan stories, but.......only one Robert E. Howard.

Howard also gave us....

Another Howard creation Solomon Kane

There is a new Red Sonja movie in the works also. She was a character in one of his short stories, but the movie isn't based on that version of her, but the comic book version instead. It will be set, I believe in REH's Hyborian Age, though.

Anytime ya deal with mythology, Biblical. literary characters ya need to stay with the story as it was. Don't like what Marvel does with that..

REH's Hyporian Age has never been seen the movies sucked at telling the story, talk about an incredible time/world there it was.

Recommend reading ...Conan...the first in the saga, best example of Heroic Fantasy,

And,,,,thank you sir.
It seems like "Heroic Fantasy" would be a very broad genre, whereas everything (IIRC) mentioned here is more "Barbarian Fantasy".

Going with this...

"Heroic fantasy" is the name I have given to a subgenre of fantasy, otherwise called the "sword-and-sorcery" story. It is a story of action and adventure laid in a more or less imaginary world, where magic works and where modern science and technology have not yet been discovered. The setting may (as in the Conan stories) be this Earth as it is conceived to have been long ago, or as it will be in the remote future, or it may be another planet or another dimension.

Such a story combines [sic] the color and dash of the historical costume romance with the atavistic supernatural thrills of the weird, occult, or ghost story. When well done, it provides the purest fun of fiction of any kind. It is escape fiction wherein one escapes clear out of the real world into one where all men are strong, all women beautiful, all life adventurous, and all problems simple, and nobody even mentions the income tax or the dropout problem or socialized medicine.

L. Sprague de Camp, introduction to the 1967 Ace edition of Conan (Robert E. Howard), p. 13.

A hero vs a villian in a world that could never really exist.

Thanks RaZon, i've pretty much read everything listed here.

My father left me a legacy of interest in Fantasy and Science Fiction with so many books of those genres scattered around our home as a young kid.

This thread reminded me of him and it's great to see so many talking about and enjoying some of the great books and authors from that era.

Okay, so by that definition, Piers Anthony and other, similar authors would be included, not just the Barbarian/ Warrior storytellers. I wasn't trying to be critical, it just seemed like the topic here was specific to that genre. (Point of clarity; I'm not saying I'd include Piers Anthony as one of the great fantasy writers.)
I would, however include Anne Rice. In fact, she would top my list. (Which is fairly limited, since I haven't read a great deal of fantasy books.)

Cool to find another fan of this kind of thing. I apologize for assuming that wasn't the case.

Piers Anthony one of the great sci fi authors as ya know, I just put him in with Arthur C, Clarke, Robert Heinlien, Issac Asimov etc. Then we have H.P.Lovecraft and the supernatural. it's all great stuff.

"Sword & Sorcery" "Gothic" "Fantasy Adventure" above mention "Science Fiction" add "Horror"

Anything set in a world that could never exist would work I suppose.

Ann Rice, why is it I/m not familiar with her and should be.

No apologies necessary, how could you have known.

BTW, Apple Tv is releasing Asimov's Foundation series this fall. That is a very serious endeavour indeed, Foundation is one of the most iconic SiFi series of all time. It will be tough to pull off.

I own the books and started to delve into it a few time but never have. Not sure I want to see the movie first, hmmmm?

I remember reading Ender's Game when it came out and thinking, "This isn't gonna be a movie anytime soon."...Then a few years ago they finally had the technical ability to make it and I was really excited. Turned out meh.

Just with the topic at hand, has anyone seen The Green Knight based on the Arthurian poem? I hear it is very good.

I forgot about that. It did look good, although very stylized, compared to the story I remember...which honestly isn't a lot.

Is it on any streaming service?

It just dawned on me, wouldn't pro rasslin' be heroic fantasy?

Can't talk heroic fantasy and not mention John Normans GOR series,

No series has more books in the saga, must be a 100 of them, lucky thing is each can stand alone, no story being told.
