Good read. I've seen a lot of great college backs but none come close to what I saw in Walker. I liked reading about the former players and coaches who thought they had a stiff. It was probably like they were in the phone booth and saw Clark Kent turn into Superman.

He seems to have such a dry personality, but this guy is such a phenomenal specimen. Maybe it was a result of his admitted depression.

I remember watching him on those NFL strong man competitions and they would always talk about how he didn't weightliff and did push-ups and sit-ups, like a thousand a day.

Herschel, Bo Jackson and Barry Sanders were the best I've seen at the college level

Barry had the moves. Not sure anyone could top him in that area.

Bo was a good bit faster though....and Herschel was as fast as Barry.

Bo and Herschel were both a little faster than Barry Sanders. Sanders was quicker, more agile and had better acceleration, but top end speed goes to Walker and Jackson, barely.

actually Bo's top end was easily higher.

Anyone who has seen Barry Sanders run strongly disagrees.

#Emmittsbiggestfan #EmmittisbetterthanBarry

Barry had one great season. If you compare that to Marcus Allen's heisman yr I'd say Allen's was better against better competition.

‘Glad both of these guys were Cowboys (just too bad Hershel wasted all those years in three USFL).

Well, all those voices in Herschell's head telling him to play in the USFL, the NFL, to be a ballet dancer, an FBI agent, a bobsled Olympian, a bill collector for Columbia record club . . . must half been tough.

I was thinking about Bo Jackson.

Bo would probably rank fourth on my list if I had a list of great college backs.

Walker
Peterson
Dorsett
Jackson

Both Walker and Dorsett deserved two heismans.

Not to mention that The New Jersey Generals owner offered him nearly $5MM which was unheard of at that time.

There's nothing Herschel did in college that Adrian Peterson and Bo Jackson didn't trump.

And Marcus Dupree might have been better than any of them if he stayed.

Except that Herschel outrushed Bo by nearly 1000 yards and 6 tds despite playing one less year....

And running for 1300 more yards than AP...

First true freshman all American. Consensus all American three straight seasons.

I'd say he trumped them .

When isolating the best college backs, that becomes hard, you would probably have to add Jim Brown, O.J. Simpson, Billy Sims, Archie Griffin, Marcus Allen to the discussion as well. I honestly believe Walker was no. 1 and you could argue from the ones you listed and I added who the next 4 would round out the top 5.

I meant to add 'that I have seen' somewhere in there. As a kid Dorsett and Allen where probably my favorites to watch.

Allen played on the better team. Both guys faced two top ten ranked teams during their Heisman seasons. Sanders averaged 7.8 yards per carry the year he won the Heisman(Allen averaged 5.6 ypc). That is an astonishing average.

You do know Walker once held a world record as a sprinter?

A football players speed is judged by their 40 time and Bo Jackson "reportedly" ran a 4.12 40 in 1986 at the Super Dome during the combine. Hershel Walker never ran under a 4.2 in the 40. NFL Network ranked the top 10 fastest players to ever play in the NFL and had Bob Hayes #1, Bo Jackson #2 and Darrell Green #3. Walker didn't even make the top 10.
