Except that Herschel outrushed Bo by nearly 1000 yards and 6 tds despite playing one less year....

And running for 1300 more yards than AP...

Herschel played one less season, but he had 344 more rushing attempts than Bo. I lean toward Walker, but Jackson was pretty good as well.

Bo would probably rank fourth on my list if I had a list of great college backs.

Walker
Peterson
Dorsett
Jackson

Both Walker and Dorsett deserved two heismans.

I think Peterson was very good, but I don't put him up there with those other guys when it comes to college football. He is the better NFL running back, but those others listed were better college running backs.

‘MY GOD, A FRESHMAN!"

Even 35 years later, nobody can believe what they saw on Sept. 6, 1980.

On that day, Georgia running back Herschel Walker and Tennessee safety Bill Bates met in one of the most famous collisions in college football history

Awesome video of Hershel Walkers as Freshman Trucking Bill Bates. Glad both of these guys were Cowboys (just too bad Hershel wasted all those years in three USFL).

One would think that Bates, when that happened, would have given up the ghost to be in the NFL. But nooooooooooo, he had to set new standards in slowness for the adoring Cowboys fans. Yes, he was a hard-hitter, but slowness prevented him from delivering the hard hits more often dan not.

Well, per Jimmy Johnson, Bill Bates won one against H. Walker. I remember in a documentary JJ said when he first came to Dallas and in one training session Bill Bates single-handedly stopped Walker like a rock and that what made him realize how tough Bates was and how he knew is one to keep

There's nothing Herschel did in college that Adrian Peterson and Bo Jackson didn't trump.

And Marcus Dupree might have been better than any of them if he stayed.

Yup, my vote goes to Marcus Dupree. That guy was ridiculous.

Could you imagine having Hershel as a rookie now and how exciting the future would be? Could only wish...

Bates doesn't get the credit he deserves from many fans. He is one of my favorite Cowboy players due to the amount of effort he put in to every single play. Fans forget that Bates brought attention to Special Teams play and the impact a single player can make , like no other player in league history. He was a big hitter with limited physical talent , but the effort he put in made the whole league take notice. That same effort was put forth when he played safety as well. He was The type of player that makes others better due to the fact that they had to put out 100% or Bates would really make them look bad.

Marcus is about my age and I was able to take notice of how he played week to week due to both of us being from Mississippi. The guy had the potential to be one of the best RBs in history if it wasn't for the knee injury. I have never seen a RB with his size , speed and natural ability to run with the football.

I saw Dupree play once, as a freshman at Oklahoma, in October 1982. At 52 years old now, (19 then) I've never seen a person that size, run that fast! Ohhh, what might have been!
