First of all, I'm glad Miles is doing well, but don't get the anointing oil yet.
He has to be consistent first.

T.O. had great top end speed, but lacked great acceleration, had terrible hands, and couldn't get separation unless he was given room.
His production is due to the fact that in sheer size and strength he overpowered DBs, and if they let him get away there was no catching him.

Austin runs decent routes, is elusive, fast, has great acceleration, good hands, and can jump.

Austin has the edge as far as physical ability is concerned, but he has a LONG way to go in order to be compared to T.O.

However, these T.O. homers are being ridiculous.
He's a Bill now, and he's sucking it up.

I am sorry TN700 .... I know you are all passion ..... but Owens has been a physical monster for a long time.

Miles is playing great ..... but he will have to do this for a while before he can be compared to Owens.

I like to give the Owens nuthuggers grief as much as anyone ..... but on the field ..... Owens is a great player and has been for a long time.

I'd say his fans are the main reason people keep bringing him up. The way they were saying our offense would fail without him, Romo sucks without him, etc.

What's the actual discussion here? The better deep threat or the better big play threat?

Obviously, given TO's body of work, he must be considered the better "big play threat"; in his prime, he would catch short passes, and routinely turn them into long gains.

However, "deep threat" has a far more specific meaning, in my opinion. The term is most often applied to players who are known for catching passes deep downfield. This requires not only speed but also good hands and the body control to outjump defenders. TO had excellent speed and stength, but his hands were suspect and he seldom outjumped anyone.

In this regard, I would give Austin the nod. TO was a mediocre deep threat.

Two games against a hall of fame career? Whoever this guy is he is just silly.

It was mentioned in the present. And why do people hold on to the past when comparing players in the present? I had a friend that kept arguing that Vanderjagt was the most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL. I kept saying, yes, in the HISTORY of the NFL. Games were being played on Sunday and he was barely making extra points. The history is in the past, you can't put that towards today's game. If so, we should have divided up those 200 receiving yards that TO got against the 49ers and put them towards the Pittsburgh game, or the Baltimore game. Miles Austin is a better deep threat NOW than TO is NOW. Who cares what TO was two years ago? That has zero bearing on what happens on Sunday against the Seahawks.

I disagree with this completely, TO was a monster deep threat in his day, and still was just a couple of years ago.

If Austin does this on a yearly basis, then we shall see. It's like comparing Newman to Deion because they looked alike, and they do sort of look alike on the field, but Deion was an absolute SHUT DOWN corner, even though he rubbed fans the wrong way, and still does.

you are right...and thats what i said...Owens has the exp over him..so it would be wrong to say "hes way better" but i believe we are better off for now with Miles, and he has the potential to be better

I agree with the thread starter...Miles at this point >>> Owens

And it's not even close...That jump ball against KC would of been a easy pick for KC. Owens wouldnt fight for the ball or much less attempt to jump.

Lets see Miles when bracketed over & under with 2 defenders, another reason Romo & RW better get to a point where they can say "can you hear me now" at least....

....if Miles can pull a consistent double team, then the pre season consensus #1 wr better start pulling big numbers..

and yes, as another poster stated........lets add a few more games of solid production, and Garrett finding ways to get him open before pouring the "annoiting oil" as BP would throw out.........

What happens when teams start double-covering Miles Austin? What happens when they roll a saftey over to stop him?

Again..he's had 2 good games...defenses will adjust. It's what happens after those adjustments that will determine if he's a star or just got lucky.

I'm not being a downer, just being honest. Owens saw a lot of double-coverage for a reason. That happens when guys start playing well. The good thing is that it could open up the run game, but we'll see if Garrett/Austin/Romo can make adjustments to counter defensive schemes to take out Austin now.
