Ok I posted a while back about buying a HD bigscreen. Well, I decided on a Mitubishi 57inch 1080p. I currently have Directv standard digital signal. Is it worth the extra money (price of the reciever $300 and $10 per month service) to go with HD? Is there a huge difference in picture? The quality of picture from my little (OLD) 27 inch to my new tv is amazing.

All input is appreciated

Thanks in advance

Glen

IMO it is a waste of money to have an awesome TV like that, but NOT have the HD programming package. So yes, it's worth it IMO. And yes, there is a HUGE difference in picture quality.

Call DTV and say you are going to switch to Cable HD. Play it smart they will have a FREE HD dish installed and commit to buy the HD package. Worth it.

I was able to upgrade my dish to HDTV for free. Throw in that you lose reception in rain with your current receiver - its terrible.

To buy a HDTV and not use it makes no sense. It's all that and more. I can't watch regular TV anymore.

I didnt think about that. DirecTv is usually pretty good about giving free stuff when you threaten to leave. However, I just recently signed a 1 yr contract for using thier movers conection :-(

yeah no question.

Directv has been adding hd channels daily, I love the new nhl network in HD.

If you have an hdtv, not having directv is a mistake.

I really was having rain issues with a 6-7 year old dish. Had bought a new HDTV and was ready to go cable HDTV. I called to cancel seriously and they had a new HDTV and receiver in my house free that weekend. Just had to sign up for HDTV package and terms etc.

BTW - new dish and no rain issues. Love my DTV HD and football packages.

I'm actually mad, because I lost some HD channels that I was gettiing before. May have to call and find out what's going on.

I just upgraded to the HD DVR and I lost the HD channel to a few local channels that I had with my HD receiver.

Don't worry about their stupid contract crap. Just threaten to leave and they'll probably give in. Talk to the retention people.

In fact, I thought just today I saw a Dish Network commercial offering free HD-DVR to customers, use that on them.

Seriously call and say you are having rain issues and are fed up. Just bought a HDTV and going to cable. Continue to say you are canceling for poor service/reception.

They know the new HD Receivers and dishes fix all that and they will give it to you. I only did it because I was totally miffed with any rain or snow and my reception was in doubt.

New equipment now not one issue in a year. They are getting $ out of me in programming.

New dishes/receivers don't fix it. I still have occassional issues. Thankfully football season and heavy rain season don't overlap so it's not much of an issue.

One thing to check is make sure you dont have any trees or other stuff blocking your line of sight to the sattilite. It caused me issues at my last house. But I still have issues when it rains. It just doesnt last as long

Try an ota antenna, in your market you will probably pull a ton of channels. I get all the locals in hd here, but in case they go out I have a terk tv5 antenna. I leave in my attic except when I am recording the cowboys in hd on my computer. It was well worth the 40 bucks I spent on it!!

Here in Dallas-fort worth directv does not offer pbs or the wb in hd, so you need the antenna for it. I actually watch pbs so I use it for that...! Plus I have not done this myself but I believe if you run it through the dtv hd dvr you can record the stations the antenna picks up and you will not need to switch inputs.

I just got a 46" Samsung HDTV for my family room about two months ago and I too was like can the picture REALLY be that much different?

The answer is yes...it's unbelievable. I can't believe that I waited this long to get a HDTV.

I called DirecTV and they gave me the HD DVR Plus and installation of my new HD Dish for free.

And yes it's worth the extra $10 a month for the programming. As others have said DirecTV has many HD channels now and they are rolling out more just about every day. I've read that DirecTV launched a new satellite in September and October in order to get like 100-150 HD channels by the end of the year.

Somebody else said this before and I agree...I can't really stand to watch non HD channels now. I can't wait for the day when all channels are HD.

The only bad thing about HD is it ruins all other channels, you wont want to watch regular TV ever again. If its not on HD Im not watching it.

i had a year old (by now) JVC that just didn't look like i felt it should so i ordered a sony and am selling the 56" jvc to my brother. in the meantime, i called the dish network and wanted to upgrade to their HDDVR and they said my antenna needed to be upgraded also as it was too old.

so, to send someone out to put up a new antenna, get me a $300 HDDVR and the works cost me $99.

suddenly since my JVC is still hooked up - it "LOOKS" the part. so yea, do it and make sure your equipment is up to date also as it makes a HUGE difference in the quality of your picture.

i watched ice age the meltdown in HD last night and it looked surreal at times.
