It was startling how well the defense played in the regular season last year. And equally unsurprising that it came back to bite us in the playoffs. You just have to look where the money and the quality draft picks are getting spent. Factor in that the three highest recent defensive picks have been out of the lineup (Lawrence: back, Gregory: drugs, Jaylon: injury), and it's kind of astonishing we were able to put together the season we did on a defensive points-allowed basis. Like remarkable.

You have to listen to the nickname jokes and the complaints about an extension and shake your head. And I'm not a *huge* fan of Marinelli's. I like him just fine, and think he's a good fit for this staff. I also want to see him put together a defense when given more talented players to see how he really stacks up to the guys I think are the best coordinators in the league. But there's no denying he's done good work with very little so far here in Dallas.

No doubt suspension and injuries have hurt this unit. I think Rod has gotten the most out of the players he has worked with. Guys hustle to the ball and have worked hard but does not change the fact that talent wise they are limited. I don't think it is that hard to understand. A few years back the OL looked like crap and all the coaching in the world was not going to make them look like all pro, in the end the Cowboys addressed the OL and put real talent on the field and it shows.

One of my pet peeves with fans complaining about coaches is that they very rarely adjust for the quality of the players when assessing the coaching job getting done. I've mentioned many times John Wooden saying his own best season coaching was on a sub-.500 team. You want to see progression, and you want to see bad players getting better. Marinelli's accomplished both of those things in Dallas. You can also tell from hearing anybody in the organization talk about him that players and staff and administration all love him. He's doing something right.

Good point. Anyone that could take a George Selvie, and turn him into a sought after free agent, is doing something right. He seems to get the best effort out of his players. David Irving is a prime example.

I love how Cowboys fans both whine about how they have no talent on defense, and want to fire a coach who has no talent to work with on defense for not making the 2002 Bucs defense appear out of nowhere. Keeping Marinelli is fine.

Keeping Linehan is so obviously correct that it hardly bears commenting on. With a new QB the last thing you want is to shuffle OCs and stunt their development, especially considering how fast Linehan got Dak got acclimated to a pro offense.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Part of that lack of talent he has to be partially complicit with. I hardly doubt he had the likes of Hayden etc. forced down his throat. The secondary that they finally let just fade away this offseason is basically the same one that both he and Kiffin inherited from our exercise of giving Rob Ryan all of his playthings. So all of this was the result of him being humble and waiting for his turn? I doubt it. Even his "rushmen" and "orphans" concept is built on overachievement.

Sometimes coaches create their own job security with the label of doing more with less. Hudson Houck did it for years until finally it was decided that no, trying to win with the Phil Costas and Montrae Hollands of the league was not going to work.

Well, this explains the delay on the Romo trade......Jerry's been so busy with these he hasn't had time to answer all the trade calls coming in.

Well I will say about Rod, he is unselfish. He knows when as a team we need to go with an offensive player instead of someone with his own unit according to the draft.

I hope he does that in this draft also. Most DCs always want players for themselves, Rod has demonstrated he will go against that selfishness.

I give him a load of credit for that.

Never seen evidence that Houck actually turned down highly picked players that would've played for him.

Interesting. Maybe, Jerry and Jason had a little to do with his unselfishness!;).

Yeah, Rob Ryan wanted Mo for his D. That didn't turn out too well, but he wanted to look good with his unit.

Get the BPA, turns out wrong alot less.

I get wanting stability, but I'd like to see us actually have a good defense under Marinelli for an entire season before he gets an extension.

Our d was good last year. Good at ppg, good in the red zone (on the road, #1), and #1 in rushing defense. And #13 in sacks. He just needs players that actually want to make plays.

I could never understand the hiring of Ryan. He was grossly over rated and was the exact opposite of the kind of coach/personality that the Cowboy organisation traditionally would have hired. I never got the creature working in Dallas.

Outside of Sean Lee, who has Marinelli had to prove his defense really works? I think they are finally doing an overhaul and getting players he wants. We got rid of two press corners because they obviously don't fit his scheme. We just need to hope that Malik Collins is that nasty d-tackle and hope Byron can become a ball hawk safety.

Well Rob pounded the table. Got Carr, then got Mo.

Pounding the table worked for that moment, but it got old real quick. Now they have let the guys he wanted go. I haven't figured out why others haven't figured this out, but we are doing what Rod wants to do now. If there isn't a defensive guy he wants at that draft spot, guess what, he won't get drafted whether its a DE or not. He's not going to pound the table.

I like that, we aren't just one unit, we are a team.

Ryan was a mistake. A fat, dumb, pirate-looking Eagle-spawed dummy. At the time, I know Garrett was interested in Capers, but that couldn't happen. People were excited about Ryan and his multiples formation, but he was a weird choice from the get-go.

I do have to admit I liked the quotes he'd throw out to the press, but he wasn't good enough to ever overcome being related to Buddy Ryan.
