Who were the two highly ranked safeties we passed on in the 2nd round that dropped to us? Anyone know how these guys are doing with their respective teams this year?
The Safety the Cowboys really wanted was Abram but he was drafted at #27.
- Abram is true Strong Safety but he has range.
The Safety that would have been the pick at #58 was Thornhill.
- They had Thornhill rated as the top available Safety at #58 but he is a FS/CB type and they really wanted a true Strong Safety.
- They projected that either Safety Will Harris or CB Justin Layne had a good change to make it to their 3rd round pick.
- I'm curious if they considered Layne as a possible Safety considering he is 6-2; although, he would need to gain weight.
- Will Harris was drafted at #81 and the Cowboys had #90.
My issue with drafting Thornhill was that if they had used a 2nd on him, then they would be unlikely to use significant resources in the near future on a Strong Safety which is what they really need.
The other option was to draft a "Safe" pick at DL. They could draft a Tyrone Crawford type that has a high probably of being an OK NFL player but a low probability of being an elite player.
Side Note:
- Last year's 2nd round pick Connor Williams played really well in the Eagles game and has been improving with each game this season.
- He is really good at picking up stunts and blitzes and working with the OC and OT.
- He is good at 2nd level blocking and is on a trajectory to be elite in that area.
- Obviously CW was more developed than Hill, but CW was not really ready early last season despite starting game 1.
