Hindsight draft

And thats exactly what youre getting.

Check out @CalhounLambeau’s Tweet:

And I can say with fair confidence the scout is exaggerating or misinformed. I am a ND grad. I am a member of one of the insider boards and this question has come up before when the stories started that the father was a pain in the butt. The father had opinions but was never a pain in the butt or a problem child when his kid was at ND.

You would think if the dad was a big problem that would have surfaced at ND and yet he never had any issues or confrontations with NDs coaches. And as far as I can tell the Stanford staff as had no issues with the father either.

Lonzo wasnt much of an issue at UCLA either, but it blew up once his dad got a platform to speak from.

Lavar Ball was a pain in the *** even before Lonzo got to UCLA and outspoken while his kids were in high school.

There are a few off-field reasons why ESB fell.

Supposedly his father is a tyrant over all three of the boys, and if youre drafting ESB youre drafting the dad and he's extremely vocal and confrontational. ESB carries some similiar traits from his dad into the interviews and it rubbed some the wrong way.

On the field I also understand why he fell. He's a huge physical specimen who refuses to use any of his height. He never makes plays above his head, so his height is completely useless by how he plays. It's maddening to watch. If someone were to be able to fix that, then you got something. Right now I'm not expecting much.

He doesn't have a good vert so not his game to high point balls.

As long as we didn't mess up on Landry, I'm pretty happy with the draft.

My preference was to do LB/DT in the 1st and take advantage of the WR depth later which we did.

If we hit on LVE, I'm pretty confident Williams and Gallup were safe and will live up to their grades so I'd give it an A.

It all hinges on #19. 50 & 81 were picking up the gold dropped at your feet. (I do hate missing out on A Miller though). I am skeptical of LVE but now that he is here, gotta hope I was wrong. If he doesn't live up to 19, a later round pick will have to far exceed expectations to balance it out. If he does, we should get everything you could ask for out of the first three.

Rest of the class, don't know enough about most of them.

My redraft:

1st - LVE - sounds good.

2nd - Connor Williams - sounds good. I may consider Justin Reid here.

3rd - DaeSean Hamilton. I like Gallup, but I had a higher rank on Hamilton. Couldn't go wrong either way though.

4th - Josh Sweat. If we're going to take a backup DE, let's get a guy with the upside to blow the doors off.

4th - Mo Hurst if team doctors say he's good to go, Tim Settle if they don't.

5th - Mike White - sure.

6th - EQ St. Brown. I don't know why he fell, and there's probably a good reason, but he has WR1 talent.

6th - trade for Austin - sure.

6th - Tegray Scales. Just need a body at LB.

7th - Bo Scarborough - sure.

I'll take this draft with Tim Settle

I would have traded for the Chargers' first round pick back in February before they knew how valuable those two spots would be.

It depends. Do you think it's better to use your 1st round pick to get a 1st round linebacker, or to use it to reach for a 3rd round strong safety? ;)

various:
A lot of re-drafts have guys with serious medical ??.
I can't speak to Hurst. Landry or Sweat or that type of guy but when they fall it's because the league as a whole had concerns and some team said it was worth the gamble.

I can't justify WR round 1. Moore is a Gallup clone but a hair faster. You got that very slight downgrade at pick 81...

I probably would have traded down TBH.

But end of day I can see how what Dallas did works out so well for them on the field.
They badly needed a guy that can play all 3 linebacker spots and LVE was really the ONLY guy you could say that about.
For that you deal with the fact he is raw day 1 and might have some rough games early.

I'm OK with

1-LVE
2-C.Williams
3-Gallup
4-HATE Armstrong(I take Ade Aruna)
4-Schultz
5-M.White
6-C.Wilson
6--Meh on Covington(I take Leon Jacobs)
7-Scarborough

since the Cowboys had cleared him. I would have taken Hurst over Armstrong. All the rest I'm fine with.

1- LB LVE - 6'4 256 4.65 (39.5 vert)
2- OL Connor Williams - 6'5 305 5.05
3- WR Mike Gallup - 6'1 205 4.51
4- EDGE Josh Sweat - 6'5 251 4.53 (39.5 vert)
4- SS/LB Shaq Griffin - 6'0 227 4.38
5- FS Dane Cruikshank - 6'1 210 4.41
6- 1 TECH Foley Fatukasi - 6'4 318 5.18
6- OL Desmond Harrison - 6'6 295 4.90
7- OL/Blocking TE/ST Jordan Mailata - 6'8 345 5.14

Speed, speed, speed - plus mass (stress MASS) destruction on D, O and ST. If Cowboys really wanted to draft a blocking TE then they could have waited until much later in the draft. Mailata could be the most devastating blocking TE and kickoff coverage specialist ever (until he's groomed to play OT or DT).

Former Rugby player is a force as open field tackler or running in open field touting the ball. Freak measurables for his size as well.

I wouldn't have taken LVE and in hindsight, that would have been a mistake. Looking at it now I would have gone:
1. LVE
2. Williams
3. Gallup
4. Traded up for Ian Thomas
4. Shaq Griffen
5. Traded up for Maurice Hurst
5. Mike White
7. Darrell Williams
*Traded for Tavon Austin
*Traded Switzer for an equivalent rookie contract LB
* Signed Hankins in FA
* Trade 2019 2nd for Earl Thomas

The trade ups hurt and likely cost our 2019 4th & 2019 5th. But I think it's warranted given the unexpected loss of Witten and the talent we'd be getting in Thomas and Hurst.

Here is mine (assuming trading up is not an option):
1: Leighton Vander Esch - I gave this pick a hard time pre-draft. But once Derwin was off the board it really only made sense. His ceiling is right on line with Luke Kuechly when he was entering the league (not based on color of skin kids). He's amazing and digging through the garbage boys in the trench and getting to the runner. He is also more than capable of covering anything in front of him and is an athletic kid who can play side line to side line. Struggles in route recognition in deeper coverage, but has plenty of athleticism and football IQ to learn over time. He has less on field time than Evans who was also available, and has really shown improvement every week. Versatility is also a big part of this boys game. He can play every LB spot in every situation. He can rush, he can hit, he can contain, he can diagnose. If he hits his potential he is a huge upside play here. Top 5 potential, round 2 floor. Solid pick. and again hindsight LVE here is better than a lot of options down the line. BY A LOT

2: Connor Williams - Let's be honest.... this pick was a (bad word) home run. Not a man, a monster. PANCAKE MACHINE. Athletic. Arms that are just good enough and footwork good enough to call home and tell your local dance instructor about. Just a beast. Solidified the weak link in our line, and even made it so we have some of the most quality depth on the bench thanks to our starting versatility.

3: Michael Gallup - Welp. Dang. Call me a homer... but honestly this was the way to go. Gallup was my #4 WR by half way into the season, and a player I was very high on, but never thought would be an option due to need. Figured we would take one early. The thing that Gallup does well is EVERYTHING. He is quick of the line, fluid hips, amazing diagnosis of man v zone, over 50% catch rate on 50/50 balls, right on the 6 foot 205 line that you like, quick twitch, great personality, and very smart player. GREAT pick up. If he hits his ceiling... shoot man, we have a Randy Moss. More likely he is 750-850 yrd 8 td type right off the bat. #13 will be my jersey of choice this season.

4: Josh Sweat - Here is where my strategy would change up. I would select the otherworldly athletic Sweat right here. His floor is above Tapper, and his ceiling is double digit sack specialist. That value in the 4th with the coaching staff you have, you are getting Randy Gregory with no off the field issues and a higher up side athletically. (Armstrong is not a bad pick either)

4: Marcus Allen - A real box S with great instincts. Is going to come in give 110% and make his tackles. He is the ultimate box safety, and one that would be a ready contributor in our single high scheme with Woods being the single high guy.

5: Foley Futukasi: A big time run stuffing NT that is a day 1 plug and play stopper on our D-line. Someone who compliments the style of play our O-line already brings, and has 3t type traits. His dominance at 1 and 3 is right behind Vea in this class. He is what opens your boys like Sweat, Collins, and DLAW to get home.

6: Equanimeous St. Brown: My man that fell and fell. He is an athletic freak, and is absolutely going to kill it. Not exactly a route runer, but gets enough separation to be productive. His biggest flaw is the rounding of his routes. He makes up for it big time in speed, size, and ability to catch. Youd like to see him use his size more, but that is easily something you can work on with him in the NFL, especially with how many players dallas has at WR. 6'5" sub 4.5 is all I have to say... IN THE 6TH! jeez... im sad now...

7: Poona Ford: Another guy in that DT rotation making this defensive line one of the most formidable in the league.

I'd go into FA and grab a TE, punt it til next year when we aren't blind sided by it. I would try to grab Tarvarus McFadden too. I think he could come in and compete for at least Marquez Whites spot or the PS, or push Byron back to safety, or even compete at safety. just a body with high up side.

I think I had 2nd round WR's as:
1. Miller
2. Washington
3. Chark
4. Gallup

But the point being is I had them as 2nd round guys so to get Gallup at 81 is fantastic value. I honestly think the margin between them is very thin. Chark is a little bit different as a 4.3 burner that needs to develop but the other three I think are plug and play guys. I think we got a great player.

Rest of the class, don't know enough about most of them.

Not bringing in Miller for a visit is one of the biggest head scratchers for the entire draft for me...and I don't believe it's a size thing because they brought in Kirk.

I think the kid is an exceptional talent.

Pretty good, but I think I'd have Gallup ahead of Chark by a landslide.

I think Gallup is way, way more polished and with Chark you're hoping the traits translate.

You should take him in your hindsight draft like me :)
