But did we make the right move firing Rob Ryan ?
I mean we are ranked 28th on defence in the NFL.
We had 7 staters go down on defence last year , and they still looked better than this year's version.
I know there will be a transition period , but some of our better players seem miscast in this defensive scheme (Carter, Ware and Mo to name 3).
Meanwhile Rob has taken a sorry group from last year's Saints team and has them playing pretty solid D.
What to you folks think ?

I'm starting to wonder too.... I think maybe all the Kiffin naysayers may be right... Still, he can't cover Danny Woodhead for Bruce Carter and he can't rush Peyton Manning for D. Ware... I hope the can right the ship this week.

If Rob Ryan could coach as good as he can talk and eat he'd still be here. Hats off to the Saints but I was never impressed with him. OTOH I hated the Kiffin hire from the word go. At USC (with good athletes) he was clueless at stopping the spread and defending the middle of the field. Not a good fit for a team that had the exact same problems.

I think Rob has the luxrury of playing with the lead. I wonder how many times the saints have trailed this year.
He can be agressive in calling the d.
Of the few series I have seen of the saints they seemed to get confused just like the Boys did last year.

instead of doing the (should Dallas sign this player thread) maybe we can also start "should Dallas hire this coach" threads, as well. They will be lots of fun.

I for one am glad we went back the 4-3, i think by next year we will generate more sacks and i like the turnovers this D is starting to create. Its the offense that needs to capatilize one some moves the D gives them.

Is anyone sold on the new St coach?

I thought the defense showed signs of being poorly coached under Ryan and I wanted the change to the 4-3 defense. I didn't expect or want Kiffin and his outdated defense to come to Dallas. I would have went with a defensive coach that used a system similar to the Seahawks. Kiffin would have been a great hire 15 years ago. I think Ryan got more out of the talent because some players have regressed under Kiffin. Kiffin has brought more of a swarming style defense, they just swarm after a twenty yard gain.

Way, way, way too early to come to a conclusion on this.

Bottom line is we had mediocre results with Rob Ryan for 2 full seasons, and his track record is more of the same. Kiffin is only 5 games deep here. FIVE. The old man deserves more time than that before we start declaring his hiring a mistake. Don't count him out just yet; he's certainly capable of getting this thing turned around.

And keep in mind, just because Rob Ryan's defense has been playing well for 5 games it doesn't mean they will be for 16. This comparison is popular around here right now, especially for people who were critical of the Kiffin hire when it happened. We'll see if that's still the case in December.

I'm sorry but do far this change has been a disaster, more turnovers yes but who cares if they can't stop anyone. Only team we looked ok against was the poor old rams

I think these next two games will be very telling. If they can't stop Wash and Philly, then I will lose hope. I am not sure if the coordinators or the scheme is the problem. I think there is a lack of overall talent.

Next two games are huge, especially against Philly.

Personally, I think so. I mean, it may have not been the best choice for this season, but I'm a much bigger fan of the Tampa-2 4-3 than Ryan's convoluted 3-4. We are also in the beginning of a bit if a transition period for many of our defensive players (Ware, Ratliff, Spencer to Lee, Carter, Claiborne, etc), so it kind of makes sense to reevaluate. Ideally, I'd like Marinelli to take over as DC next season and for many thereafter.

I don't disagree with firing Ryan. Switching to the 4-3 I did disagree with though.

more like we made the wrong move on depending on a d-line that is old and injury prone going into the season.

No hindsight here. Shocked when Ryan was fired. I thought he did an excellent job when half the defense went down with injuries. Hated the Kiffen and 4-3 switch. Seems like Jones and Garrett have no foresight. They make it up as they go. My favorite part is watching all the Ryan haters shut their big mouths because their boy Kiffen is crapping all over the place.

I wish we would have hired Ray Horton. His system fit our personnel and was a much more sound version of the 3-4 defense.
