Agree on Dayton Family. They are quality UG who take it seriously. No slanging, robbin, just to do it, etc. Out of Flint, MI Similar to Scarface in that there is always message with the darker stories.

man you went in! Hip Hop my friend!!!!
yeh.... I like the those dayton cats... got a new fan.....(yeh on scarface similarities...)
Illegal & Da youngstaz, and even mobb deep, when they were little dudes with their first album, dropped some hard tracks for teens.... whatever happened to Malik from Illegal anyway? He killed it on the last track(?) on Snoops debut album.

Yeah loved Mobbs CD Juvenile H### as a kid (was hard to find in DC), same with Infamous, Hell on Earth, some tracks on on Murda Muzik, then lost me:oops: Still see them as pioneers for that type of gritty NY story telling. Lost Boyz Rennee is a clean version of the same idea but obv w/o the ugly, etc. The story telling is definitely becoming a lost art (all rap).

Naw but you got me hip to Da Youngstaz/Illegal PHI UG there (and the positive aspect to what this thread is about outside of everyone posting their faves, etc. me included:D---good look). The old DC mixtapes I used to buy off the street from vendors were labeled regionally Memphis, ATL, NO, HOU etc. and my DC bias stopped me from embracing the N (Phi/NY) underground or immature reasons common in other DC residents (long story/history). Got over that obv after realizing how dumb it was and how much I was missing out on.

rap was regional when it was at its most informative period... now that its dominated by pop music, crossover is world wide..... go figure.

Good observation there on the reason behind it (want to appeal to everyone = more $) and a point to not stress regional culture/influence is a good way to do that.

saw a twitter post that "Ether" was the best diss track.

didn't agree so it spawned question for me of what is the best diss track ever.

For me:
1. Who Shot Ya --- Bad Boy denied this was a diss but reality is everyone on the street knew what it was before it ever hit actual airwaves. Made Biggie the once and forever accepted king of new york.
2. No Vaseline --- Cube was name-calling but in very specific factual ways, lol.
3. Takeover --- Like Cube Jay name-called but again he hit real facts real hard.
4. Nail in the coffin --- Benzino is largely a joke and Em destroyed him in every way. The level of detail is incredible.
5. Hit em up --- Biggie fired up Pac and brought out the best in him but in Hit em up he was almost too mad.

Ether --- Still top 10 because of the lyrical skill of Nas but calling a dude ugly who has never pretended he wasn't or saying he is gay-z AFTER he TRUTHFULLY says he hooked up with your baby momma is rather weak at best. ironically,(for nas who often has terrible production) the beat is sick tho!!

Do you mean diss tracks or 'i'm coming to get ya tracks with specific name drops?' Big v Pac deftly, 36(Memphis) v Bone, Snoop baiting the east, Playa Fly hated 36, Pac hated Dre, Pimp C n Jeezy, Jada n Seagal, etc. Will look for some clean links and cool topic. UG gets cluttery with that bc just about every song involves that in some way...

When LL came up.... he performed at MSG on a bill with Run Dmc & The bestie boys.....
the rumblings was on how great a young lion LL was... there was tension between himself and the vets RUN-DMC....
After LL came off stage.... RUN-DMC went on...... and RUN proclaimed......
