Just popped in to give my respects to DC, but I have been following this thread for days, and yall have been posting some good music. But you have left out a few very important names(with the exception of RonSprings who mentioned RunDMC). So for old skool rap fans like me, I want to add some great music. From the pioneers of rap, from those who all the youngens who have been posted grinded their teeth out on, the masters of rap, the originals, the grandfathers and godfathers... This is how a beat flows and this is how my drummer drums...

And for those of you taken by lyrical meaning, try this one, given by the Master himself, without profanity. Didn't need no filters or editing back in our day. The Message was given fluidly and came across loud and clear.

awesome....can't forget this man either...

Important, were these men works... the original rhyming patterns.... as the years past, folks tried different cadences, rhyming in different patterns, off beat....etc.... I posted Rock Box last because that was where rock and hip hop met, Run DMC will always be considered pioneers for claiming to be "The King of Rock" in the world of B-Boys....Beastie Boys quickly followed suit..... gotta give Rush Management (Russell) Credit....he had some ground breaking acts.... and it allowed hip hop to invade popular music...... signaling the arrival of hip-hop as world force, but also signaling its eventual demise as a underground experimental urban art form.

Buddy

The native tongue was strong, for the short period of time they existed....
A movie/documentary on them is coming in the next few years.... should be informative.

The Last Poets

The Watts Prophets

Gil Scott-Heron

The origins... I'm sure it can be traced further back.... but this is where poetry, frustration of the urban bustle, & music first found each other.....
The dance and art (graf) quickly followed......

And since this is a football forum...
Tre Mason is Plug 3 aka Mase from De la Souls son.
Not a surprise, Mase was a wild dude.
