Rah, Rah..
(Outsidaz, huge influence on Eminem's early puchline style, he ran with them early in his career. Master Ace also had an influence on Em's early Flow)

The Formula

Dallas Texas rap (what!! even though he rolled with the Compton giants NWA) Lyrical content was amazing for someone who didn't come from the east coast at that time, opened up a lot of doors....... Classic debut album....
RIP to his voice, which he lost in a car accident (severed vocal cords)

The Ghetto

Though a simpler rhyme style... Too short was one of the original Bay Area Giants
(props to E-40 & his machine gun encoded flow as well)

awesome....can't forget this man either...

Important, were these men works... the original rhyming patterns.... as the years past, folks tried different cadences, rhyming in different patterns, off beat....etc.... I posted Rock Box last because that was where rock and hip hop met, Run DMC will always be considered pioneers for claiming to be "The King of Rock" in the world of B-Boys....Beastie Boys quickly followed suit..... gotta give Rush Management (Russell) Credit....he had some ground breaking acts.... and it allowed hip hop to invade popular music...... signaling the arrival of hip-hop as world force, but also signaling its eventual demise as a underground experimental urban art form.

Aahh, thanks man! I was racking my brain last night trying to remember Kurtis' name. I wanted to post one of his, too. I always dug the heck outta ole Kurtis Blow.

You and a few others mentioned Eric B. and Rakim. Rakim, and also D.O.C., are two of my sons all time favorites, and he is only 24 yrs old. Yeah, it really sucks what happened to DOC. I feel so bad for him. He also loves Three 6 Mafia, with DJ Paul and his brother Lord Infamous, who tragically died this past December, and the other goofies from that group. They've had their ups and downs, but they are one of the best groups I have ever heard. Can't really post much from them on here, though, as they can cuss it up more than Snoop can. LOL He liked Fat Pat a whole lot, too, he was murdered in Houston. Too young too sad.

A few more...

This one 'cause I just love...

Back when this next one was brand new, my mom bought me the record. It was the size of an LP, but it was all one song. I was in hog heaven! Real old skool here... I don't really care if these songs are "commercialized" or "mainstream". They are the reason we have so much and so many types of rap today. Hell, ANY rap today! They were the pioneers and the soldiers, the Bravehearts that cleared the path for the others to pass through with their own future creative styles. They should be commended and never forgotten or dismissed. And God bless 'em. Couldn't live, nor could have ever been, without them! I could easily see this thread battin' 1000 pages. lol

Ugghh! I'm so mad, wanted to play Got Your Money by ODB (r.i.p., dude), and Slick Rick's La Di Da Di, but can't find a clean version, and I would be banned within 10 seconds of this one! Ugghh!
So I'll just move on...

I love this little girl, she's a cutie beyond measure, and one hella rapper. ;)

Speaking of ladies.....
Here is the Master of the Ladies....the Godmother of Rap....Ms. Beautiful, the One, the Only....

And some more wonderful and beautiful rap women...
You'll notice at the end of this awesome flow, how Ms. Elliott pays homage to Run DMC. Respect!

(Hooh! I'm sweatin', trying to find "clean" versions of my favorite songs, you don't really think about the language til you have to. lol) The clean versions aren't quite as good, because of the breaks in the flow, but yall know where youtube is and I'm sure ya know the real versions already.

Not exactly rap, sorry, but this is a ladies' post and this lady has one of my most favorite songs of all time. Had to post it. Love her voice so much. And the beat flows fine.

Maybe we should just open an R&B thread. I could see how it would be chock full in no time, with all the eras from all the decades, from Billy Holliday to the Commodores and beyond. What an awesome thread that would be.

Underrated and overrated are weird (for me) when it comes to hip hop. I've always been an underground hip hop head (my dad was a b-boy in Brooklyn in the late 70's/early 80's, and I've always been a fan and involved in the scene). So I feel like people like Scarface are both underrated and overrated. Most underground/pioneer followers I've met have always included Scarface in the top 5 of all time. I definitely wouldn't include him in my personal top 5. But then, if you look at mainstream, most people don't even know who he is, so in that regard, I'd definitely say he's underrated. Nonetheless, he's great. I appreciate every emcee who contributed positively to the movement.
