Historic picture of Tom Landry

What a great man. Sorry I was never able to shake his hand. I may have literally bowed at his feet.

I’m sure there’s a similar picture of a young Jerry out there somewhere, but he is touching a stripper instead of a map.

My grandfather on my Dad's side was a POW in a Stalag in Bavaria in that war. He never would talk about it and we never even knew he was a POW until he passed away in 1990. Only then did we discover it after going thru his personal effects. Very humble man like Landry, a proud man.
My dad during WWII was stationed in Alaska for almost 2 years. Went from there to Okinawa. He always talked about how he loved Alaska. But never would talk about Okinawa. He started to one time, but broke down, and just could not do it.

Landry, Staubach, Lilly, Pearson, Dorsett. The mount Rushmore of why in large part, the NFL is what it is today. Yes, the Packers rival this, but that is it. Landry always gave us a fighting chance to pull out a win, even when things looked bleak. We went into every game with the mindset that we should win. This kind of culture now seems rare these days for us. Jimmy Johnson was that way. But for a short time. Landry was a Christian first and he walked that walk faithfully on and off the field. Bravery and commitment was like getting dressed in the morning to him, it's just how he rolled.
+1

Exactly. I think there are certain aspects of war that cut deeply emotionally speaking, for soldiers. It stays compartmentalized but never ever leaves a person.

Wow man that’s beyond heavy. At times I see shows or movies depicting war, and I have no idea how those guys got through it. No choice I guess.

Watched a Yogi Berra doc about a year ago. His job in Normandy was to walk into the water and pull out the dead to the land one by one. That’s just…I don’t even know…

He said…”baseball is easy. WAR is hard.”

Can you believe that uber azz clown, ruddy faced, drunk, paternity dodging moron fired that great man?
To be fair to that joke of an owner, it was one of the stipulations of the purchase. They lowered the price so he could afford the team on the condition that he immediately fire Landry.

That he fired him isn't the issue. How Jerry did it showed his lack of class and respect for what came before him.

Flying missions in a B-17 over Western Europe was a scary place to be. Many never came home.

Salute to Coach Landry and his brothers in arms!
the average crewman of a B-17 lasted 11 missions.
They only got to go home after 25.
unless permanently crippled or dead

75% never made it

Tom Landry was a man's man. Cowboy fans should everyone be forever indebted to him for getting the franchise off to such a wonderful start. Jimmy Johnson was a very good football coach at the right place at the right time and he made the most of it. Both of them knew what they were doing and how to do it. However, since then...........well you know...

People forget that Major League Baseball basically had to shut down because over 500 pro baseball players and 2000 miner leaguers went into the armed forces.
Oh we remember. We had to watch that skeezer Madonna and blimp Rosie O'Donnell depict them in that movie "Plague of their Own"

Geena Davis was the one saving grace though.
