When Andrew Luck was coming into the league, I thought the Cowboys should just ignore the draft and sign him to a contract. Then let the NFL go to court and tell a judge why a monopolistic business can tell a young man the only place that he can work.

This might be a good time to test the theory. It would be an excellent way to stand in the middle of the bank holding the grenade. As the most wealthy and popular team, it would be good for the Cowboys. Why should Carolina get equal access to players when we're dragging them along?
Do it, Jerry.
Then give up all your 2018 draft picks.
Then give up your team.
Then rant as you are wheeled into the high-class nursing home.

I suspect that a number of NFL owners have greater annual profit (revenues minus expenses) than Jerry has. The reason for that is simple, they have other businesses in addition to the NFL team they own. In large part, Jerry has put all his eggs in one basket ... ownership of the Cowboys.
Blimey! A new playmate!
And a good post, matey!

Wouldn't matter in a bit in a uncapped NFL.

Paul Allen is worth $18 billion dollars. Jerry is worth around $5 billion. The $100-200m more profit a year that the Cowboys make than other teams just wouldn't mean squat compared to the fact that other NFL owners's net worth is much higher in Jerry's.

Salary cap is a good thing.

Most owners are not going to lose money every season just to try and win.

The extra revenue that the Cowboys bring in would be an advantage in the long run.

Far be it from me to shoot down ones ideas, but this ranks up there with one I read a week or so ago on facebook after it was said the draft will be in Dallas.

"Why not through a parade for Goodell before the draft begins. We could have him in a convertible waving to his thousands of fans going through Daley Plaza."

Take it up with the courts. Denying history with a gif doesn't change it.
The reason the NFL exists is that it was allowed to become one as a "legal" monopoly. Previously there were two equally competing leagues that merged. The anti-trust law was to prevent scenarios where companies become so big or powerful in any particular industry such that they can explicitly or implicitly stifle competition.

It's already been tested. The NFL was found to be a "natural" monopoly, in that it isn't preventing the formation of other leagues or forcing them to sell themselves to the NFL. Other have formed, and failed. It's a huge financial risk most people with the means aren't willing to take. As for the draft, NFL franchises agree to a set of rules when they join the league. Player rights are collectively bargained as well. Why? Well, for one thing, to legally prevent what you're suggesting. It's also why Zeke can't just ignore the suspension and play anyway, as was proposed here a few weeks ago.

WOW. im really happy i avoided all those Zeke threads now.

Do you know why the Elliott suspension was upheld? It’s not because a judge thought he did it, it was because Goodell’s power to discipline, was collectively bargained for. And this would more or less be the same. The draft is collectively bargained for, as is the salary cap, so you can try and violate either, but it’s far more likely that the players agent would ignore your calls.

This is the biggest issue. The NFLPA missed the forest for the trees in their quest for bigger amounts of money for the players. They got their bigger money but in turn blindly handed over basically unchecked power to Goodell to reign as he sees fit.

Pretty stupid on their part, to be honest. Which is why I believe the next go around is going to be a lot more rocky and a lot uglier cause the NFLPA will be trying to make up for their oversight here.

I disagree that the NFLPA is to blame. The owners weren’t budging in this issue and quite honestly it isn’t worth missing games over since it effects so few players. Owners that will pitch a fit once it effects their players, like Kraft and Jones shoulder much more blame.

Would it not be great if we could do something as lethal as that and survive without a scratch because, if it were possible, that is exactly the kind of thing I would do each time after reading some of these threads.

Who owns the Cowboys brand, Jerry or the NFL. What stops Jerry from forming another league with the Cowboys as the center piece?

And to me this is one of the reasons for the Zeke over reaction. After the Rice fiasco, there were some in the gubment who threatened to revisit the NFL's anti-trust exemption on a year to year basis due to the leniency and potential coverups in the Rice case.

That anti-trust deal is the golden egg that keeps the NFL capable of thwarting any and all competition, which drives those insane TV deals, which funds that $50M request. The league will go to any length to make sure that anti-trust exemption is never revisited. Zeke/Jerry was caught in the cross fire of a much larger battle.

Agree with your observations and premises re purchasing power , profits etc. , but to me a discerning difference is JJ is " all in" on the Cowboys, many of these other owners bought a " toy" when they purchased an NFL team... He may have flaws as a GM but
when it comes to the fans / players I for one give him major kudos...

I do hope, during this upcoming Draft, that Cowboys fans organize a better form of booing that turd. Maybe some chanting of "liar" or "fire goodell," "free zeke," or good ol' "corrupt."
Well "free Zeke" would be a pretty stupid chant when he would already be long since reinstated. So maybe not that one. lol

This might be a good time to test the theory. It would be an excellent way to stand in the middle of the bank holding the grenade. As the most wealthy and popular team, it would be good for the Cowboys. Why should Carolina get equal access to players when we're dragging them along?

Before the NFL and AFL merged, they were competing for the same players to sign. I think, but not sure, each had a separate draft, and the player signed with the team that they wanted to, rather for more money or what ever their reasons were.
But they had 2 teams to choose from, if drafted by both leagues that is.

I would need to look that up to be sure.
Just as when the WFL in the 70's started, quite a few players left the NFL to join that. The concept was good, but they over paid big stars to join the new WFL. And had to fold because the owners could not afford them and then there was the stadium issues.

Then again, it was tried in the 80's, the USFL. This time they had caps I believe to keep costs lower. However, Donald Trump instead of a high salary, he paid Herschel Walker a personal services contract of like $1 million per year. Not sure why this league went out, I guess the lack of interest.

So Walker was drafted by the USFL, and Dallas selected him in the 5th round. So when the USFL went defunct, Dallas still had his draft rights. Can't remember the trade, but Dalls sent Butch Johnson to Houston Oilers and some other player involved, I need to look. to up. But we traded for their 5th round pick and took Walker. Tex Schramm, Gil Brandt, Tom Landry. Best trio ever.

Oh, and Trump did not have to release the rights to Walkers, as he was on his payroll from the personal services contract. but he did, as he did not want to hold up Walker's NFL career, nor probably pay him the money. LOL

This might be an all-time bad idea.

Another team would have drafted him. Luck would not sign with the Cowboys regardless of what they offered because his agent would never do it. Agents have to work with the league and can't afford to get blackballed. There are 1000 other reasons but we'll start with this one.

Because of the CBA.

Right now Jones is all bluster in threatening to sue and the NFL is all bluster in threatening to punish him. But if Jones tampered with a draft pick, he would (and should) be punished.

Just because the Cowboys are more popular and valuable than the Carolinas of the league doesn't mean the Cowboys don't need those teams.
