The basis of this entire argument is flawed. One knows crap when one steps in it. It does not require 7 years to determine that it's time to clean one's shoes.
By this argument, Chan Gailey, Barry Switzer, and Dave Campo were all run out of Dallas way too soon because they weren't given time to turn things around. I don't think so.
I'm not saying Parcells is crap...I'm not saying he's Dave Campo. Although I've always hated the sight of the fat bastid and hate having him on the Dallas sidelines, I do recognize that he was once a good coach. I do believe he did a lousy job with personel his first two years and that the last draft was his first good one with Dallas. I also don't see us even sniffing a SB until he leaves...I believe he'll leave us a deeper, more disciplined team, but that a younger, more energetic and innovative coach will get us over the hump.
However, I will argue that the 7 year plan is NOT what Parcells was hired for, nor is it what should be expected. If he is indeed the greatest thing since sliced bread and the greatest coach since Tom Landry, then the Dallas Cowboys should be a serious contender after 4 years. 4 years of FA, plenty of draft picks, coaching, and philosophy from a HOF coach should be enough to finish at least 2nd in the NFC East and be a serious contender, and I don't mean a contender for the 6th playoff spot.
If the Cowboys miss the playoffs again next year, or don't at least show up and give a great effort to be admired in their playoff game, then I don't want to hear any more crap about Parcells, and I think any fan will have the right to call for a different coach, whether the owner goes that route or not.
