Gurode plays better with the man in front of him, so why not try him at NT?

He's big enough, he's got a mean streak, we have iffy depth at NT so why not give him a look in practice?

We got thin at TE and moved some defensive players over on the goal line formations, shouldn't it work the other way too?:D

Why not? Back in Larry Allen's early years, I thought he should be put in the defensive line during goal line situations.

Heck, why not...although when I talked about LA doing this, I got laughed at...

Nors too. When we finally agreed on something.

Very intresting and since a NT job is to push guys back, and he basically does that at center why not.

Not bad BZ. I think you were one of the few who agreed with me on Hunter possibly trying WR. You may be on to something.

NT in a 3-4 has to do more than that... He has to occupy two holes.

He essentially has to keep his man infront of him and collapse the pocket. However he must be able to fill the holes on either side of that man instantly. This is where I think AG would have problems. I don't think he has the upper body strength to move a center at will, or the speed to move himself in front of the play.

Ferg has the strength, while Glover has the speed. Those are your two models of NT players.

Gurode has a mean streak? He hasn't shown it in the 3 or 4 yrs he's been here. The only streak I have seen from him is his false starts.

But LA was a All Pro OL, Gurode is fighting for his roster spot, much different situation.

Even though I'd be against doing it, Allen would have been a very good NT.

Props for thinking outside the box, but these ideas rarely work out. Bouncing things off the wall like this earn you a reputation for lunacy.

See: Nors.

You can't just say, "Well, why can't he do it? He's a strong guy. He plays well against NTs."

There is too much of a willingness with this line of questioning to assume that position changes are possible.

In the NFL, its better to pretend that position changes are NOT possible. Then when you come across the rare player that can make that swap and play with efficacy, you are pleasantly surprised. If you do it the other way, assuming that position swaps are easy and possible, you will waste a lot of time trying to make players do things they cannot.

And as of right now, I see no evidence to suggest Gurode could make such a switch.

I think Gurode stay at the center position either earning a starting job or providing quality depth to the position. I just do not see him being moved to defense.

attacking and protecting are two different things. sure he can defend against a NT but can he attack a center and make a tackle?

I said, "See if he can do it in practice."

What is the harm?;)

He wastes reps at a position he won't be able to transition to, and loses reps at the spot he has a chance to make the team at.

I agree. I don't know that I would like to see this. Holding a gap and blocking someone is totally different from trying to explode a gap and get unblocked.

How so? He is not playing center for all the reps, now is he?;)

I'm pretty sure he's getting some first team reps, and some 2nd team reps, so which reps will he be missing if he changes colors and plays 3rd or 4th team reps at NT?

Heck, experiencing line play from the other side could make him a better OL, too.:D
