Horrible Drafting

The frustrating thing is. Draft and develop alone doesn’t win championships for any team.

Look at all the Super Bowl winners in recent history. All of them also had some key FA or trade acquisitions that helped them get over the top.
That’s what FA is ideally for. You build up a roster through scouting and drafting and if you’ve done your work well, you flesh out the roster with targeted, high quality FA additions to fill areas of need.

We look at FA like shopping at Dollar General. It’s not going to win SBs with this approach, but it does keep the cash cow fed and that’s really where this has to boil down to if we want to see change. Fans need to collectively demand this FO take winning seriously by actively not supporting the team. That’s like herding cats, though. Jerry really does have himself embedded in a perfect financial windfall year to year with no accountability. It’s maddening from our perspective, but the only way to stop it is to quit supporting the current paradigm.

Guyton's biggest problem is between his ears.
Yep. Not sure I'd call him a bonehead like Sam Williams, but Guyton's problem is lack of confidence or mental toughness... or both.

And I'm not sure that can be corrected. In fact, I'm pretty sure it can't be.

Fortunately, I still think Nate can be good there.

Last 4 to 5 years of draft picks have put the team in this position. Can't keep missing on 1st and 2nd rd picks. Guyton, Sam Williams, Kneeling, Mazi, Spoonmaker, Kelvin Joseph.

These are 6 out 10 players drafted in 1st and 2nd rd in last 5 years. Franchise killer.
last 2 have been pretty bad and when you don't spend in FA and depend on draft and have bad drafts, then you end up like us. specially on the defensive side, where we have missed almost every pick...except a couple

Yeah Guyton has been one of the worst tackles in football this year and last. Is there improvement? Yeah, but its pretty minimal. Still giving up way too many pressures and a lot of quick pressures at that. As much as we knock Steele in pass protection I think he has been significantly stronger than Guyton has this year.
Too bad we can't gift Steele Guyton's health & athleticism.

I have always acknowledged Steele's weakness with lateral movement especially post injury but defended him. I gotta admit he was getting worked pretty good yesterday too.

Not every team has the players that Denver has but just another reason we aren't good enough, even on offense, to really compete. I think they really need to end this year with a plan. Do they move Guyton to RT in the offseason & work to prepare one of the other guys at LT?

I am with you, but most of all of those guys were considered great picks at the time of the drafting. it just sucks NON of them panned out so far.

Guyton still has a chance, i would have rather drafted that kid from Utah that Egirls got, but he was lower on MOST all draft boards as a 2nd round pick.

Williams is being played out of position he's a SOLB in a 3-4. Joseph was just a head case. Spoonmaker im with you on that one we did not need another TE at that time.

all in all, i believe our Defensive drafting is suffering because he are in the wrong defense. Parcells said it was easier to Find athletic big DL that can play the 5T and NT than it was to get the guys to run a 4-3. we need to move back to 3-4. if we did that we need to find a SILB we have a WILB in Overshown we have 2 OLB/EDGE in EZ and Williams, you have guys you can play at NT and END Now. but they are on smaller side and need to be bigger. in the backend We need more playmakers. IF You moved to Press man again you have bland and Diggs (If he stays) you have a Nickel CB now but you do not have the Safeties to run nothing. ALL Safeties are SS we have NO FS.
My point was teams can't miss often on 1st and 2nd rd picks because they are supposed to become starters. This team has been terrible over the last 5 years. Surprisingly, they have been decent in 3rd rd and later.

They need to hire a draft guy just for the 2nd round lol been terrible the last 20+ years

which is the reversal of what had been going on as we were doing good in the higher rds but starting in the fourth we sucked
now we are doing better in the later rounds and screwing the pooch in the first two
Though we were only at about 50% if the second anyway
but we were hitting on each first
now?

Been saying for years Jerry could save a ton of money and have a more talented roster if he fired his college scouting department and purchased 3 or 4 draft guides for about $100. I follow the draft all year and have been for decades. I'm left scratching my head just about every year b/c our board always seems to vary a lot from the consensus. It's not just the defense , its picks like Guyton (who was the 8th or 9th ranked T) and schoonmaker that baffle.

There are errors in judgment- like Mazi. Every team makes them. These are mistakes in talent evaluation. This one was particularly bad, but they are understandable.

Then there are strategic mistakes. These are worse. They are just stone-cold bad decisions. Schoon was this type of mistake. Just a flat out stupid decision.

Our drafting has been overrated for a few years now. About time people starting to discuss it.

Great Drafts had been the only thing propping up this clown show.
Now that that's fallen off, the bottom of the barrel is our destiny.

yes i agree we need to spend as much if not more time on our 2nd and 3rd round evaluations.

They got sad feelings for missing out on LaPorta so they forced the Schoonmaker pick.

Pathetic.
What's crazy is you watch Schoon's film from Michigan and I could have instantly told you he didn't have the athletic ability to be much of a receiving threat in the NFL.

He had nearly zero production in college too. I am fine missing on a player with elite traits and low production, or high production and elite traits, but Schoon had neither. Totally puzzling why they took him in the second.

I am no expert, but I have no idea what the scouts were looking at there.

This is the cold hard truth. Since the Cowboys do not use free agency, they have to draft better than anyone else. When they fail to do so the impact is much greater.

BTW, I see some fans are still defending Guyton. I am not one of those fans. I think he is at best an average OT, maybe worse. He was one of the most penalized players last year, and after last night, he is on pace to be near the top again this year. On top of that he give up a lot of pressures. He needs to get better, a lot better. The entire offensive line looked like hot garbage last night at times.
Nailed it with the no involvement in free agency quote.
We needlessly tie one hand behind our backs with our refusal to participate.
Drives me crazy how bad our front office is.

This OP is probably gonna travel down that same old rabbit hole of who is the drafter, McClay or Jerry, so whose fault is it.

I am not too worried about Guyton, some expecting Tyron Smith, I was not. Williams hurts, I thought he would get it by now maybe its coaching but hard to say, 3rd Defense in his young career. Mazi is looking more and more like a bust, Schoonmaker yeah you could get the same performance and skills so much later in the draft, Kelvin yeah well I got nothing. That being said, every team misses look at Elam, former 1st rounder by the Bills those are the ones that hurt.
guyton, is one of the worst tackles in football. its his second year. first round pick. playing the 2nd most important offensive position. I think he is average at best and he is here for another 2 years before we let him walk.....Jerry is not going to make changes and pay for the same position twice. he sees every contract to the end. why else would Schoonmaker still be on this team!!! same with Mazi
