LDE - Taco (6’6”, 280+)
LDT/1T - Draft pick/FA (a BIG, Ted Washington clone would be nice), Collins
RDT/3T - Irving (6’7”, 290+),Collins
RDE/LEO - Crawford (6’3”, 260), Gregory?

Agree on Taco at LDE but I could see the 1T being a draft pick instead of a free agent depending on what the market looks like. Also I think Collins will be greatly improved next year at 1T when he is completely healthy. My take on your depth chart would be this -

RDE - DLaw, Tapper
1T - Collins, FA or Round Draft Choice
3T - Irving, Crawford
LDE - Taco, Crawford

Randy Gregory would be a bonus but I don't pencil him in yet.

Exactly, its idiotic to build up a rookie based on a play that is more luck than skill.

By this measure, DeMarcus Ware was a wasted pick because he never blocked a kick in his entire 11 year career.

I’ve written about this before as well. In this scenario, we would need one of the numerous guys from the Pete Carroll defensive coaching tree. They have run their 4-3 a variety of ways, even with essentially 3-4 personnel. I keep having this vision of of our 4-3 looking like this:

LDE - Taco (6’6”, 280+)
LDT/1T - Draft pick/FA (a BIG, Ted Washington clone would be nice), Collins
RDT/3T - Irving (6’7”, 290+),Collins
RDE/LEO - Crawford (6’3”, 260), Gregory?

SLB - Draft Pick/FA (Bruce Irvin-type like Harold Landry)

This STILL allows for 4 pass rushers with the added luxury of a DOMINANT, dedicated Elite run-stopper.

The 4-3 SLB only plays about 15% of the snaps. As a rookie Harold Landry could play RDE on obvious passing downs.

Move Collins to starting 3tech and Irving to starting RDE with Irving/Collins as the DTs in obvious passing situations.

The 1tech in the modern NFL must be quick because of the zone blocking scheme and emphasis on passing. A few mega-size DTs like Snacks and Poe are quick enough but generally most 1techs are below 320 these days.

How about the fact that all it took was for him to get more reps and be on the field. These coaches are some of the worst talent evaluators. I will give them the Awuzie over Brown decision though.
Taco has been active and seen snaps since week 1. He's a rookie and needs reps yes, which he got, but never deserved a full time role. Most rookies don't.

even atlanta?
Atlanta with Bic Beasley is odd. In some games he has a decent amount of rushes from OLB but in other games almost all if his pass rushing is from DE in a 4-man line.

Seattle (Bruce Irvin), Denver (Von Miller) and Oakland (Bruce Irvin) have done it some years but all have tended to move away from doing it. Denver switched to a 3-4. Irvin did it more in his 1st year with Seattle and 1st year with Oakland but it trailed off afterwards.

I like the concept but it's not used a lot. The 4-3 SLB position just doesn't play many snaps in the modern NFL. Players like Beasley/Irvin have to play DE or WLB/MLB on most snaps. When offenses use 3 WRs, the SLB is off the field.

he could move to the dl on obvious passing situations.

Was really nice to see Taco so active, getting a consistent push, and generally looking like a legit DE. Hopefully (and I expect this) he will continue to progress.

I didn’t like the pick, but he was always a high potential player who did everything the right way but who needed to develop technique.

As long as he’s developing technique, it’s not the end of the world. And he does appear to be improving.

Prevent guarantees failure. Its Rod's preferred scheme. I don't understand his thinking. I am a pressure ...man coverage type. That requires defensive talent. The Cowboys simply wouldn't commit to that. Defense wins.
You cannot beat great QBs by expecting them to make mistakes, and our defense is predicated on allowing the offense some easy plays and expecting them to make a mistake. We don't force the issue. I don't know if it's Garrett or Rod, but that philosophy will never win in the playoffs. The results of beating bad teams and losing to good teams over the years speaks for itself.

When did this defense last make a stop at the end of a game to preserve a win? My memory could be wrong, but it seems like crunch time stops are few and far between.

Amen. QB's must be punished and live in fear. Great defenses intimidate. They hurt the sizzle playing WR's and intimidate the QB's. Its the law of the jungle.

All I know is whatever way we go I trust Will McClay. I’m quite sure he’s smart enough to know defense needs to be the offseason focus
